I lost my truck friday, my son has a few weeks off during semesters he doesn't have to start teaching his summer courses for about 10 days so he asked if he could use my truck to get some projects done around his house. He gave me his 2019 nissan rouge. The dang thing doesn't even have a key! you just get close to it with this small remote thing and the doors unlock ect. No way I could figure the inside out, it has a button to push to start, and I keep forgetting to turn it off when I get out. I had to pull over on interstate and it took maybe 5 minutes just to find the AM radio on this big touch screen thing on dash, ( he is gonna love the am radio) I don't know if I can make it for another week, I am afraid I am gonna hit the wrong button/switch and mess something up, but I guess he can straighten it out later..............

No way in hell that anyone can get into a newer vec at night that they have never been inside before and just drive off.
(have to read the 400 page owners manual to find the headlight light switch and what is that warning symbol that is flashing trying to tell me) Is it the seat eject warning????????
and replacement parts cost, headlight assembly $1000 plus and takes a computer nerd to replace it.

My problem is I don't use 75% of all the new stuff. Just for grins when I bought the last vehicle, 2019 Acadia, I asked if they had a base model without all the electronic thingamajigs. The salesman got on the computer and said he could only find one and it was at a dealer 2 states away. BIG difference in price ( close to 20 grand ) but if you don't get the super duper electronic stuff you also can't get the stuff you do want. All the options are sold in packages to get one little option you have to buy 10 you don't want. Those options are how the manufacturers make their profit. 500 dollars in electronics that they charge you thousands for. They tell us distracted driving is dangerous and then put all these toys in the vehicle. My favorite is when a tone sounds and on the screen a message comes up saying that you should keep your eyes on the road. Of course you have to look at the screen to get the message. 😵 Bob 0 -

Youins have explained the reasoning for buying the base model Kia Soul I purchased and paid off in 1.5 years. I listen to mostly AM talk radio and could not care less about fancy do-dads. The radio works, it get 35 MPG, has a real good heater and A/C. The tires are 205/60/16 a common size that does not bust the bank to replace like the fancy ones in the 20" range.I would buy a new truck if it had a non-smog diesel, A/C and AM/FM with USB port, vinyl floor and power windows for 30K

Welcome to 2020.My cousin's vehicle shuts off the cylinders that aren't needed, while rolling down the road, then the engine shuts down at red lights - It restarts when he presses on the accelerator!Amazingly quiet and smooth.

My old 1997 gas powered golf cart does many of the same things these new rigs do! 
I had a hard enough time back in the early 80's figuring out how to plug all the wires into a VCR to a TV set, let alone messing with todays blue tooth stuff! I had a blue tooth once and my dentist had to pull it!
I know I'm just an old f.a.r.t. and with age comes a bit of stubbornness for the easy things we already had to learn about way back when.0 -
My Acadia has the variable valve timing feature and goes from using 6 cylinders down to 4 when just cruising if that is all it takes to maintain speed. Does it really save gas, I don't know because intuitively it seems that a 4 would have to work harder with higher revs than a 6 at lower revs to accomplish the same result. Yesterday there was an accident 300 yards down the road totally closing the intersection. The fire department guy wasn't more than 25 yards from the scene with his stop sign to keep cars from getting through so there was a pretty good back up. Judy and I started waving down and stopping vehicles to let them know they couldn't get through before they ran out of driveways to turn around in. It is a country setting so not a ton of traffic but they pile up quick when they have gone beyond where there is anywhere to turn around. But back to the point of this - about half the people would pull up, roll down their window and ask what was going on. I wondered why a lot of them were turning of their vehicle while talking until it dawned on me The vehicles were doing it automatically when they stopped. DUH! Judys Equinox does the same thing but I wasn't bright enough to figure it out until the third or fourth time it happened. I guess I will forever be a caveman when it comes to these new fangled thingamajigs. Bob0 -
Shutting down at the lights is the hardest to get used to. I rented a car a few years ago and they did not tell me the car did that. Got to the the first set of lights out of rental agency and car shut off. Of course the first words out of my mouth what the hell is wrong. Put the car in park and it restarted it. Hillbillie, Been there done that. Bought a new Ram Laramie Longhorn (tan leather interior) this year after over 50 years as a Chevy Truck Guy. GM screwed me on 2013 Silverado rust problems and you can not get a light interior like my 2015 Silverado had anymore. Only way to come close is a High Country. Ram listed for $66,000. Has anyone priced a High Country lately !!!!!!!!!! I spent about two months researching and pricing this truck.
I use to do all my own work and restored Volvos for years but I think working on my new Ram truck will come to a end now. Like stepping into the space ship on Star Trek. Engine shuts down and restarts at light, running boards come out when you touch door handles and if I look left while backing out of driveway it warns me a car is speeding towards me from the right 75 yards away. The screen in middle of my dash is bigger than monitor for my computer. And it goes on and on. On my trips down I81 your way i just won't worry any more, that is what warranties are for at my age. Only problem is it will take me a year to figure out all these HI-Tec Gismos. Oh well, guess that is what manuals are for.-----Native Son of Virginia0 -
Although the engine does not completely shut off, my new Harley does turn off the rear cylinder when I come to a stop, touch the throttle and it starts instantly. Supposed to help it run cooler, even though it is liquid cooled. It has a separate manual for the electronic command center that is thicker than the owners manual for the bike

Used to be a pretty good mechanic and still am on the old stuff,50’s to the 70’s and tractors and small airplanes . Wife has a 2018 Toyota . All I am qualified to do on it is check the oil and water . Son has a 2018 Tacoma , he asked me to check the transmission fluid. After 15 minutes of looking for the dipstick I gave up and read the book . No dipstick, you have to put it on a lift to access the transmission to check the fluid level . I miss the simple stuff

That shut off thing is crazy....they told me about it, but it still kind of scared me when it happened. The dash has a little countdown thing that pops up when it happens too. I haven't sorted out what the heck all the doo-dads are on the front screen, but there is something always popping up. When you are rolling down the road and it goes into "Eco" a little green leaf lights up.
I didn't get the Hybrid because it was a few thousand dollars more. If I could have ordered a car with just the specific things I wanted it would have been fun to see what I would have ended up with. I'd have push button door locks on a car with air conditioned seats.0 -

Wife's new Traverse has the shut-off feature. Supposed to save fuel. Probably causes unneeded wear on the starter. I notice that she unconsciously, or maybe deliberately, defeats the feature at stop lights. She applies the brake to slow down, but then backs off it, coasts a bit, and then stops. That throws the system into parking lot mode and the shut down doesn't occur.
I don't like the shutoff feature. When I drive it, I pull the gear selector back to "L" and then thumb the knob atop it 8 times so that "L9" shows on the dash. Now it will go through all 9 gears (NINE GEARS!) as though the selector were in "D" and the shut off does not occur.
I figure some computer whiz will come up with a hack for defeating the feature permanently.0 -
My 2020,F-150 has a button on the dash to override the engine shutoff feature... 1st thing I do after starting up is defeat that troubling feature....

So far the shut- off has worked seamlessly in Judys 2 1/2 year old Equinox so I've stopped worrying about it. Not sure if it is a feature to increase mileage or to help meet pollution standards. Where I live there is not much chance of long waits at lights or a traffic gridlock. Some places like LA, Atlanta or NY might increase the benefits of having this feature. I am assuming it was developed to meet some government mandate or there would be an on off option. Nunn, on my new Ram, I can disable the cut off feature. Does not use starter to flywheel to restart. Of course the way I got it figured that big unit on top of the engine to drive the Serpentine belt is going to take a lot of abuse if you don't disable shut off feature. 2013 Honda has a “forward collision warning” that flashes lights if the car is too close to something. It doesn’t engage until you’re pretty darn close and I think it would be distracting and increase response time so I shut it off in the settings.
