Not many WWII vets left
Our community just lost another. His funeral is tomorrow and the obit doesn't say anything about not coming to the calling. The local honor guard and Army representatives will be there.
Dick was always there for the VFW, Legion, and the 40&8. A few weeks ago he wrecked his car and needed surgery to fix something. They had decided at his age the surgery could be more dangerous than the condition. Then it turned out they had to go ahead with it and it happened just when the shit hit the fan for COVID. So his daughter (primary care giver for years) wasn't able to come see him. Then they moved him to a nursing home and she still couldn't come to see him. I'm sure it was a miserable way to spend his last days.

When my mother was a young girl growing up in the 1940's and the last of the Civil War veterans were dying her father (my grandfather) wanted to locate a Civil War veteran, just so that they could meet him. Even in a city the size of Los Angeles, they never found one. Hurry on the WWII vets before it's too late. 0 -
I talked to a WWII vet the other week in a local store.He was wearing a Navy cap with officer insignia.Told me he went in 1943 as an E-1 and retired 30 years later a O-4. I told him I was a Seabee from 1970 to 74.He said he worked with the Seabees on Tarawa. I could only imagine what he saw on that hell hole. 0 -
when younger I was privileged to get too talk and work with a few the WWII vets some great stories some just acknowledged they were in the war maybe a few stories of being on leave or training
I have met many vets regardless of the war that did not like to drag up memories I respect that and always let them decide to tell the story's with out trying to encourage them too
last one local I knew a big old fellow passed away two years ago .
I had a boss when I worked at a grocery store I was there four years or so he never once said anything about being in the military, when he passed away many years later I read he spent time in the navy during WWII . he instilled so much about working and life into me guiding this young kid I did not even realize until years latter how good he was to me ( almost like having two dads )
funny now I realize why he was always trying to get me to be better at mopping the floors ( swabbing the deck maybe )0 -
None left in the neighborhood I grew up I. Only 6 or 7 of my parents generation left around

There’s two that go to our small church. One 99 and one 97. Both spry and quick witted.
The 97 year old was a tank commander and was one of the ones that hooked up with the Russians at the end. He has been back to the site and met some of the Russians who were there.0 -
My WWII grandfather passed away a few years ago in a private home tended to by Philipina caretakers. I only wish he could have told me what he thought about that.......but he was non communicative 0
