Bob/BobJudy - Oriole feeder question
You mentioned in another thread about feeding orioles grape jelly. We’ve got one that stopped by the hummingbird feeder today.
What type of feeder do you use to feed the jelly with?

They actually make jelly feeders that hang. They look like a small jar with a plastic flower looking bracket that holds the jar sideways and a perch for the birds. I make my own out of small jars like the ones bouillon cubes come in. Dowel epoxied on one side for the perch and wire loops around the jar and twisted together for a loop for hanging. I usually angle the jar up a little to help keep the jelly in. We have at least 4 males coming to the feeder. Not sure how many females. This year so far house finches, grosbeaks, Orioles and a catbird have been helping themselves. BobBikerBob said:You mentioned in another thread about feeding orioles grape jelly. if you don’t mind snapping a picture, that would be a great help. An Oriole was trying to get juice out of the humming bird feeder today, without success so it appeared.
I'm over in the southwest corner of the MI and we usually only see Orioles and Bluebirds as the pass through, but have seen Orioles more this year and it should be nesting/mating season by now. So thought I’d try to bring them in a bit.

Walmart has one similar to what I was talking about called the Fliteline Jelly/Jam feeder. We had one like that but the plastic cracked after a year so I just did as I described above with a jar/dowel/wire to accomplish the same thing. No fake flower petals on mine and the perch goes straight out, but it works. Bob 0 -

I made a 1/2 orange "holder" that slips over our deck rail. Simply 3 pcs. of 2 X 6 maybe 6" long with a 1/4" dowel sticking up that I stick the 1/2 orange piece on. They love it! 0 -
I used to have a Bullock's Oriole that played pure havoc with my hummy feeders. He'd hang from one side so the nectar syrup drained out, and he'd lap it up as it flowed. He'd hang there until it was empty. I'd refill it, and within minutes he'd have it empty again. Finally had to buy new feeders that prevented his little trapeze trick. Here's a picture I took of him while he impatiently waited for me to waste more of my time and nectar...

Smart little buggers ain't they? You must have gone through a lot of nectar but I bet it was fun to watch. For the first time ever in all the years feeding the Orioles a couple of chickadees were at the jelly feeder this morning. So far this year it has been at least 4 pairs of Orioles, a couple of male Grosbeaks, house finches, at least one catbird and now the chickadees. To make matters worse Judy and I were at the local Sams club yesterday where we usually buy a case of Welches and they put a limit of one two jar pack per order. Bob buy a jar of the cheap stuff and start mixing it, a little at first then slowly adding more cheap. They should get used to it before long, and it will be easier to come by........ 0
