Same with the military. Let the constitution be your guide......while we still have it.

I think Katrina answered some of those questions.  Some took care of their families, some stuck to their public jobs, and some put on their jack boots.

LEOs, as well as military etc...  are made up of and a reflection of today’s society.  True, they’re closer to the top, but still a reflection of today’s society.  As society becomes more self centered so will public servants.

The way that our first responders will react on that day will depend on more than an oath they made. It will depend upon effective leadership, organization, and advanced contingency planning.  Without these things in place, the system is likely to break down. WITH them, however, there is a much greater chance that people will stay on the job, despite the personal costs.

    Just my thoughts....

Someone can stay on the job and take care of their family, that isn't necessarily an all or nothing scenario.

Me thinks that if the SHTF in America most LEO's would try to do their job and duty to Society until it became impossible for them to do so.  At that point they would do the best they can to protect themselves and their loved ones.  I would not blame them in the least.

Katrina on national scale? Damn... That would be something. Or would it be more like L.A. Riots? Looters free for all? Be interesting to see that hot spot like they did with the COVID map. Pretty sure L.A., S.F., Portland and Seattle would play out like "The Purge". While the red states would just binge watch.

they are just like the rest of us, there are good ones and bad ones, hopefully more good than bad, in a totaly nationwide SHTF scene, I am not sure the bad ones wouldn't get shot in the back like the bad officers during war......

Personally, I believe a large contingent of our Military and 1/3 + or so of our rural LEO's would not follow "illegal orders," (in the Oath, if you have taken it.)

    My hopeful opinion.

Yes, bad Officers getting fragged, comes to mind also. (Picture Needermeir from Animal House.) Good troops will not accommodate bad Leadership. Accidents happen.

Say screw this and go home? I truly do t know what that situation would be.  Most LEO spouses and kids are self resilient and know dad or mom has to take care of business.  The officer  would check on them by phone e r whatever, but I can’t imagine how bad it would be to leave their duty.    Then again, I have been at it for over thirty years and raised by WW2 type people l. I could be fooled by the younger generation.

Our local law is the county Sheriff.  He's already proven his loyalty to his political cronies so I have no doubt this would be the plan in a real SHTF scenario. Some would get all the LEO attention but most would be "on your own".  I've already called the Sheriff out on a couple of his questionable enforcement policies so I know which group I'll be in.
I would expect most or all of the rural areas to be similar due to the limited manpower and distances.  The small towns w/o any real police force will be dependent on citizen groups to maintain control.
