The "Hong Kong" Flu, I'll never forget that one! My whole family had it for two weeks. During that two weeks, it stormed the whole time with gale force winds, blowing the Monterey Pines over into the power lines, so no power. We all laid in front of a gas fireplace wrapped up in every blanket in the house. My Mom made soup in a pan set on the fake fireplace logs. No hot water either. Ft. Ord was running GI's through boot camp, like cattle through a chute, then off to Viet Nam. The Flu shut that base down for quite a while.0 -

I remember all too vividly about being very sick just after Thanksgiving and lasting a couple weeks into December of 68. Never went to a doctor and always blamed it on contaminated turkey. I went several years where just the smell of a turkey cooking made me nauseous! To this day, Turkey is on the bottom of my list of edible fare!
Thinking today that I most likely had that flu bug and not food poisoning due to the duration of my illness and what my last meal of leftover Thanksgiving eats did to me with the onset.0 -
That's one I forgot about for some reason. But...As with many of the other flavors of influenza outbreaks, this one struck whole families and brought much of the nation to a virtual slowdown and closed many schools. In February 1957, a new influenza A (H2N2) virus emerged in East Asia, triggering a pandemic (“Asian Flu”). This H2N2 virus was comprised of three different genes from an H2N2 virus that originated from an avian influenza A virus, including the H2 hemagglutinin and the N2 neuraminidase genes. It was first reported in Singapore in February 1957, Hong Kong in April 1957, and in coastal cities in the United States in summer 1957. The estimated number of deaths was 1.1 million worldwide and 116,000 in the United States.

The point being that in the past it was not politicized to the nth degree like what is happening now. I don't feel the need to go into great depths about my disgust with the entire political system about this.
Screams about record unemployment. Well, duh. Shut down businesses and loosen rules for it, guess what happens. Its not a reflection of the economy. Its the pandemic, stupid.

I remember it well for another reason. I went to get a flu shot that year and they asked me if I got the flu in 1957. I did not; they told me you will not get it this year. They were right and I did not get a flu shot. 0 -
1968. Sophomore year in high school. The flu hit my town just before Christmas. Everyone in school got it. I don't remember a flu shot being available. For sure I never got one. 0 -
I was at Chanute AFB going to aircraft electrician school. Fall of 1968. They got us out of our bunks around three in the morning and lined us up with thousands of other guys to get a flu shot. I always wondered if they tried a new one out on us first. It seemed all the senior NCO's stood around and watched us for awhile.. 0 -
I remember it well. 100,000 Americans died of the flu that season. Everyone knew it was a bad one, and avoided anyone with obvious symptoms. Sick people were told to stay home from work so as to not infect others. That was about it. There wasn't any panic, no blue-state governors shutting everything down, no rights taken away. The media didn't have much of an agenda in those days, they just stuck to reporting the news instead of inciting panic. We all just kept doing our jobs. 3
