What is the shortest telephone number you can remember??
The shortest number I can remember is four numbers. I don't remember 4 numbers well, I was a little kid, but I remember when they changed to five number phone numbers with every phone number in town now being preceded with a 6. Meaning 7684, became 6-7684. I don't remember when but at some point the 6 prefix became 636 and suddenly our small town had seven digit phone numbers.
I found some printed pads of paper at my grandfathers house when I was a teenager. They were printed with the name of his business, the business address and his business phone number. I'm not joking!! Gramps business phone number was 27!!! I think this was from sometime in the thirty's, maybe late twenty's.
My, my, things sure have changed. Now my wife puts in 14 numbers when she calls her friends in Russia. 23-24 years ago it cost $2 a minute to call Russia. I was elated when I was able to get that down to .69 cents per minute!! Now, this one friend of my wife's will call and they will talk for as long as 4 hours for FREE!!

2 digits when a kid the phone office was across the street from our farm implement store.....could see the operator plugging in the calls...and the old crank party line phone (still have it like new) in granparents home where i now live you would crank it up and say give me #42 or drug store .....50 some years later a friend found an old phone book from that era and gave it to me 0 -

the late 50s early 60 we had a party line with 4 numbers and I believe there was 6 families on a party. then 3 pre #s, now area code 3 pre #s and your 4 #s
in md, in that time frame one I remember was park view (PV 1234) different letters for different sections of town

When I was a kid, you picked up the phone and the operator asked "What city please?". You told her, then you got the other city operator and she asked "Who are you trying to reach?". If that didn't work, you got the matches, and the blanket and went out back and built a fire and hoped someone would be able to read the smoke signals and get a message to your party. 0 -

3-3537. That number was drilled in my head before I was 3 years old so that if I ever got lost I would have a way to tell the police or whoever how to get intouch with my family. Of course no kid ever got lost back then 'cause everybody knew everybody. 0 -
I use old phone numbers I remember as passwords so I'm not going to say what they were or how long they are. I also have my grandparents old wooden crank phone hanging in the entrance to my home. I don't remember their ring but it was some Morse code letter like all the phones on their party line. They had it in their general store so when customers heard their ring they would answer it. 0 -
If I remember correctly Mom and Dads was four numbers when I was yung'um at home. Was in grade school when the phones first came through the hills. We had classes on how to use and talk on the phone.Best phone trick was dial a couple neighbors number then hang up, their phone would ring and of course they answered. Some of them would talk for along time wondering, well what do they want and who called who.You could pick up the phone and listen to their conservation. System was a "party line" and was usually 6 or 7 people on the same line.
