Delayed Background Checks
Hello All,
I am new to the site and of course the forums as well.

Every time I purchase a firearm my background check comes back delayed. After the 3 days the dealer lets me pick up the gun but the delay is annoying. I have no criminal record plus I have a conceal carry permit for my state. I was wondering if anyone else has this problem and if so what are the possible reasons for it.
Thanks

I have a pretty common last name but have never been delayed. Might be because I always put my SS # on the 4473. I had a regular customer that was delayed every time until I convinced him to do the same and after that no delays. One of my co-workers with an uncommon name was always delayed. Turned out there was a convicted felon in the next state with the same uncommon name. One time I had a customer denied and when his friend the local sheriff checked into it found he was the victim of identity theft and there was a warrant out for him! That took a while to get cleared up and he would get delayed every time after that. Bob 0 -
Who knows... I’ve got one customer that had a “disturbing the peace” arrest about 25 years ago. He’s currently got all kinds of financial background checks and had a clearance in the military. He pretty much always gets delayed for a couple of hours. Very uncommon name. 0 -
As the guys point out, there are a lot of problems in state/local criminal records. But, when your check is denied & later clarified, DOJ makes no attempt to correct their master file. Fixing this for a DOJ systems analyst would be simple, but it's not likely to happen unless a powerful Congressman gets "denied".

I've been delayed on my last 2 purchases. The recent one was annoying as I drove 1.5 hours to pickup the gun from the seller off of Gunbroker. The approval came the following day.
My guess whoever is doing the background checks (FBI or State) is so overwhelmed that they are just letting them timeout and then doing the ones that take a little more time as they see fit.

In my state if you have a CC, you just fill out the form and leave with the gun.AU Guy said:Thank y'all for the feedback. Today is day 3 so hopefully I can pick up.thanks,Chris

Every time I've been run through the system, it's always been quickly approved. On 3 occassions I was told "Thats the fastest I've ever seen an approval". I have a CCW and am the only one in the US with that name. I'm sure that makes a big difference. 0 -
I too have a carry/conceal permit (Georgia) but I don't have to go through the system as you describe ?? I pick out my weapon, lay down the money and go on about my business, my background has already been checked when the license was issued, no hassle for me what so ever.AU Guy said:I have no criminal record plus I have a conceal carry permit for my state. I have a Missouri CCW but Missouri doesn't allow it to be used in place of the Background Check.0 -
IIRC, you can get some sort of an individual ID number to avoid this.... 0 -
I always have to wait about 30 minutes for the approval to go through. It stinks and I have no idea what the holdup is. 0 -
The delay is caused by the FBI checking to see if you are someone that they want to fake a crime on. Try getting a check if you name is Flynn. 3 -
I've been delayed several times in the past and during that time I had a C&R License and a resident carry permit in Alabama and non resident permits in Florida, New Hampshire, Maine, Connecticut and Pennsylvania but would still get delayed. Sometimes for 30 minutes to an hour and one time for 3 days. I never got an answer why and I would bet my record is cleaner than any politician in Washington DC.
All politicians need to be made to pass the same background check that it takes to buy a gun before they are eligible to run for political office. They're in a position to do a lot more damage than someone with a gun.0 -
in the past most all guns I bought went to a local FFL holder close friend I always paid for his trouble even ordered a few guns he would sell at dealer cost when I picked up the gun this was for years ( I always put my SS number at his suggestion ) the timing was the same phone call he would call in give his and my info almost instantly they would confirm the info and give him a number for his log book maybe 3 minutes ?
now our state is suppose to have the system if you have a cc permit all you need to show it
I have not bought a gun lately but now one of sons holds a FFL so its a lot closer to pick up a gun and no transfer fees LOL0 -
Last transfer I did for buyer had let his CC expire, I said the only way I can do this and give you the item is run it through the NICS process. They did not give the go ahead until about 24 hours later. Could be they are swamped right now. NICS did not ask for the SS number, driver's license only if my poor memory serves me right. I knew him and he had purchased items before with his valid CC. He was disappointed, looked like Charlie Brown of the Peanuts gang, hangs head and walks away. 0 -
Though they can, some dealers will not release after three days. You might consider getting a personal identification number from BATF to speed things along. 0 -
If I know the person I would release the item after 3 days, not so if they were a stranger. 0
