I process my own deer and have been involved in butchering hogs and cattle.   Butchered chickens often and have also cleaned and cooked a wide variety of wild game and fish.   I've raised gardens, from small salad gardens to large canning gardens.   I'll get by as long as there's something to cut up to eat and ground to raise crops on.    As far as getting by on wild game, we learned from the depression the game will not last long.   As many people as there are today the game would be gone even sooner.  If folks are hungry everyone is a hunter, trapper, fisherman, gardener.

I've helped my uncle butcher cattle.   We would bring them into the barn under a hoist.  Shoot it in the head and hang it.   Bleed it into a tub, skin it, and gut it.  Set aside the heart, liver and kidneys.   Use an electric chainsaw with no bar oil  and saw it length wise down the center, you can use a hand saw.    Cut each half into quarters.  Let it cool then lay the quarters on a table and cut them up.   Take the cuts off of the head, including the tongue, and saw the tail into lengths.  A walk in cooler would be handy but if you butcher during cool weather you can let them hang.   The longer you can let them hang the better.

The old way of scalding hogs works as well now as it ever did.  There's a lot you can do with a hog including rendering lard.  Lard is important if you are getting buy on your own.

A chain hoist is handy if you're butchering large animals.   A hand operated bone saw is faster than you may think, and when you saw the bone you waste less meat.

Of course, rabbits, chickens, pigeons and some other things can all be raised if you can't raise large animals, or even if you can.

we stopped buying meat at wally world some time ago ( except chicken we feed the dogs or some lunch meat )
local butcher place we have been buying from I would bet there business ( and the other local butcher shops in surrounding areas ) have skyrocketed in the last few years people do not trust wally world or other chain stores meat .

So, does Walmart have do undergo USDA inspections, or not. They must pass all the inspections others have to undergo. Or, do they not?

I have never grocery shopped at Walmart by the way. Been in there about 3 times, total. (Electronic deals.)

I would imagine a lot of employees that witness what goes on with our meat supply line, would obstain.

My 2 cents worth. Not that that is worth anything. I would think, If it is that bad, people would be getting sick. Or No................................................................

Scout5, I remember it well. Was a fella by name of Pat Jackson in Central Virginia who use to bring his sons to help Grandpa and Granny process the hogs. I helped as much as I could but mostly just got in the way. They set up three big poles like a tee pee with a hook in the center. Then they had cross pieces with a 50 gallon drum cut in half laying in them and a roaring fire underneath it. Many a child in the old days was terribly scalded by this set up. As I recall we used Mason Jar tops to take the hair off. Granny got the job I believe of cooking the chittlings (sp) on the wood stove in the kitchen.  I got the job helping to clean them.

Grandpa I think got to attached to his hogs and i think he considered them his pets and shooting bothered him as he was a WW1 vet. He left that chore up to Pat. One shot was all it took as Pat was not much for wasting ammo.

We learned a lot from the old folks and while i never raised my own hogs I have been shooting deer and processing them by myself for almost 60 years. Like the old folks use to say " Keep your mouth shut and your eyes open kid".

When I was a wee lad in Spotsylvania VA I got to participate in butchering up three hogs, quite interesting. Don't think I could do it alone today though. I guess if hungry enough you will figure out some way :)
I agree though perhaps this virus might send us back to growing food and owning chickens etc.

We had hogs growing up. One year the city neighbors showed up during the butchering. Wanted to know if we would save them the gizzard.

Susie, sometimes a old sow will really get pissed if a chicken gets near her piglets. She will gobble that chicken up gizzard and all. :):):)

Hogs will eat most anything but a cucumber. Seen them catch as snake and gobble it right up,

Went in today cause it's close and looked like zombies had ravaged the whole store. Half of it was empty, only meat was some turkey rolls, ham and some "hamburger,"  Local fast foods have limited menus now.

Wasn't it Wal-Mart, a few years back, that got into some trouble when their ground beef was tested it was found to be horsemeat. This was in England I think. And I didn't know Wal-Mart was in England.

Lots of people today will starve to death if their ELECTRIC can opener breaks or electric goes off and the can opener won't work.
No can opener on their cell phones. (yet)
    Crazy world.
Forest Gump and Gomer Pile has lots of good sayin's.
Their only drawback is I suspect they were registered as Democrats. (but had more sense than the Democrats of todays world)

Farmers Market last week end had a Line  in front of the  Local Pork producers.  Had Sausage and  Chops and  Loins. was sold out in an  Hour.    I didn't  get any, line too long,   but  got a few bottles of local  Strawberry  and Blackberry  Wine.

Stores around here  tend to have plenty of  Chicken.  I have plenty of  Chicken of the Sea in storage.
