a Mom update. (Updated.)
Was on the road about 5-6 hours yesterday. Had to pick up Mom from rehab, back over to Orthopedic surgeon and back to rehab.
Hit an Arby's, 2 for $6 plus a medium coke. $8.74. Wth? Arby's sauce and horseradish. (I refuse to call it Horsey sauce.)

Horsey sauce doesn't have much flavor. Maybe my opinion is influenced by the fact that Judy and I grind our own horseradish every other year or so. Thanks Bob. Mom had 21 staples removed , an X-ray to confirm proper alignment and healing. They said for a 90 year old, she was excelling. Way ahead of schedule and rehab. (She is still 90.) I got her back to the rehab facility, (can't go in) and the head admin person stated, "Rehab say she might be able to check out by this Friday."
I didn't say anything there, but my Mom will require 24/7 care for quite a while. Even my Mom said, "I can't see leaving here for weeks." Tricare pays 100% for 100 days. My Sister and I both agreed she will be staying there for a while.
We have to have a contractor reconfigure one of her bathrooms to a walk in shower. She has good friends, good food, good rehab, and 24/7 care where she is. That is very good just now.
She is not mobile at all, just now. Checking her out, would be a mistake.

We/I were shocked when they talked about checking her out this Friday. Uhhh....................No.
She is paid up for 100% for 100 days. We have constant contact with her via a new smartphone and I-phone Tablet for face to face calls, and interaction. That in itself has been a struggle to get her up to speed. She appreciates it though, now that she is figuring it out, with various helpfull nurses involved.

Good news indeed . Thankful for the good outcome. So many times , at those ages a broken hip , leg , back etc is the beginning of the end and many come out in a pine box . God is good . Great mews for Mom

She is a tough old bird.
She has been independent up until now. We/and her, are hoping to keep it that way. She has a nice condo on the golf course. (After selling one of the nicest homes on the golf course, after my Dad passed about 6 years ago.)
Geez, I am 58. Can not imagine what I would feel like at 90. Can't even see making it until then, quite frankly.

I feel for you Ken. I have my mother (94) & aunt (99) just down the street. Both are ambulatory but I dread when they're not. Be grateful your sister is there, mine's useless. PS, I like Arby's 3 pepper sauce. 0 -
Agree, my mom had a brain bleed, slight speech, hand use, and walking issues. Once the improvement stopped she was out of there in a flash. 0 -
Glad to hear she is doing so well. I went through the same with my mother when she was in rehab. 20 years ago. She was extremely independent after losing two husbands and then owning her own business. It was very difficult when’s she wanted to get out of rehab because we knew she could not be home alone.
We ended up moving closer to her and moving her in to our house with us. That lasted for 5 years and my wife is a saint for what she endured during that time.
So I understand what you are going through and wish you the very best in the choices you have to make at this time.0 -

I appreciate you all very much. It looks like you are correct Barz, and Butchdog. She is being discharged either next monday, or the monday after next. (The 18th.) We are kind of kind getting caught off guard, (unprepared,) as we never expected such an early release. We are scrambling to come up with 24/7 home health care/aide.
To put a 90 year old out this quickly after a broken hip and surgery, just leaves me speechless. We are all taken by surprise. She needs 24/7 care. It looks like the construction needed to convert one of her two bathrooms to a walk in shower, will have to take place while she is there. 😣
I appreciate all your good thoughts, Prayers, and insight.

The hospital will send Mom home if you don't speak up. I went thru this with my Mom when she had an incident and needed therapy. Hospital had her in the wheelchair ready for release right then.., niece was right there as power of attorney and so was my older sister. Little did they know how to get Mom to stay. It is simple.. a sibling can request the Mother or Father continue therapy for the needed time up to 100 days. I called the hospital when my sister called me saying Mom was being released. BS, I told her I would handle it. Called the hospital and spoke with the head nurse. She was a little bitter would be the word to me. So I told her I would be on a plane ASAP and have her ass on a platter if she didn't listen. So she calmed down. I simply told her I was the son and request she stay in the hospital. Simple. Mom stayed 38 Days and came home and didn't need anymore assistance. Call the hospital or just show up and request she stay. 0 -
Check Barzillia's response. That is how it works. No one else has any input as to discharge date/time. We ALL think she is not ready, (including Mom.) It does not seem to matter. They gave us an additional week. From this Monday to next Monday (the 18th.) To get things in order. Still scrambling. Big time.

My Sister will stay with her first week. My Brother and his wife (from NM.) will stay with her the second week. The third week is mine. Working on 24/7 Home health aide care. Need to do construction also. Scrambling.
Can't stay at my house, Buddy would take her down in short order. (Rambunctious.) Just not feasible.

Apparently, it does not work that way. Please see Barzillia's post above. That is (apparently) how it works. Pretty much what we have been told, anyway. I believe Barzillia is correct in this particular situation. That seems to be the case.
They decide when they discharge. Not you. (It is all based on insurance.) Apparently.
Have to come up with an alternative scenario. Working on it. Scrambling.

You would think, they would want to keep them in, long enough to get them somewhat mobile.

No mater the person's condition, if their progress stops or has gone as far as rehab can go, opinion of the therapist, medicare/cade kicks you out. About 2 weeks is it for medi whatever you have. Get them mobile, ha, follow the money. 0 -

may try to get her personal doctor involved, don't know if he will have any pull or not, he may at the least get a in home nurse/therapist vistit 3 days a week from medicare. good luck Ken I know its not easy or cheap, but when family is involved neither of those matter. Make sure you have a high rise toilet seat for her if you are going home, VA gave me mine but it saves having to bend down to far to sit on regular toilet seat, it is just a 4-5 inch riser placed over existing toilet. it keeps the new hip from going 90 degrees or more when sitting 0 -

Barz. Thank you for the reminder on contacting the VA on their assistance/Grants on modifying your home/bathroom based on medical needs. I remember reading that in my VA benefits book that I received about 2-3 weeks ago. They offer grants up to $6800 if Service related, $2000 otherwise.
I just now relayed that info to my Sister (who has been taking the lead, and has Power of Attorney.) Her Husband is also a Veteran (Major.) He will look into it with his VA contacts this evening/tomorrow.
Thank you for the suggestion. That would be awesome if it works out.

Hope she is alright.Horseradish is the root vegetable. Horsey Sauce (the registered trademark for Arby's formulated sauce and their proprietary recipe) or horseradish sauce is what you put on your burger. Hope this helps.
