Gun oil is a scam
I probably should have brought this up 10 years ago.
I run whatever oil is in my truck as a gun lubricant.
The demand an oil faces in a vehicle engine is far greater than the demand a firearm will ever see.
As most of ya’ll know I am an engineer and I have also been in a spot where I had to design motor oil- at great cost and with greatly controlled experiments.
In 2012 I concluded motor oil is sufficient for firearms and I have been running Mobil 1 anywhere I would lubricate a gun since.
I like CLP to clean a gun, Mobil 1 to keep it running.

I always favored used oil on my guns.
Until I tried it on my AR and it developed a miss.3 -

I've found whale oil in several guns I've worked on, some that were made into the 1920's. Had no clue what it was until an oldtimer told me. Worse than WD-40 to clean out, and near impossible after it's soaked into a stock.AMT was the first to figure out on their 1911's, that two like kinds of stainless steel rubbing together (slide & frame) would gall. Until they change the side to a stainless alloy, they recommended lubing the slide rails with a mixture of Lubriplate, and Valvoline 30wt. Use that, and you needed a solvent tank to clean your gun!

Actually, I loathe Cresent wrenches. They are acceptable for a minimal-tool, tool kit, but when you can use the appropriate sized wrench it is preferable to do so, IMO.Furthermore, a Crescent wrench that provides the same leverage as a lug wrench would be the same size, so there is no advantage to toting the inferior tool for the purpose.

There has a long running argument among M1 Rifle owners regarding the correct grease to use on the rifle. The Garand requires grease: oil or CLP is not sufficient. Synthetic automotive grease seems to obvious choice for many, but Lubriplate 130, which is water repellent grease specified for the M1 Rifle, is still readily available. At about $15 for 16 ounces, one tub is enough to lube a battalion of M1 rifles. I own about 50 M1s, but at one time Uncle Sam owned 5 million M1s, so I think he knew what product was best to keep them in service and running in top form. If you need a field expedient, fine, use what you've got, otherwise to get a firearm specific product. We aren't talking about the kind of money that will break many Gun Broker piggy banks. 0 -

What ever blows your skirt up. I prefer to make my own choices, which do not include automotive oil. As long as I can borrow Mr. P's lug wrench, I will keep using Eliminator and CLP along with Slide Glide. 0 -

I bought a quart of that on ebay for like $8.00. I suppose it should last me about 25 years and by that time I would have been dead for twenty. I remember long ago reading about AK's and there loose fit and low maintenance the report of people using what ever oil ( I think the article referenced used motor oil ) wipe down the rifle use a shoe string soaked in oil pulled thru the barrel and good to go .
but I doubt if any the rifles were collector guns . I was going to say family heirlooms but they very well may be in a lot of the country's that were doing it0 -
I use Marvels Mystery Oil in my sonic cleaners. Even when wiped off after, they are still lubed enough. Even my IAI Javelina 10mm long slide operates flawlessly!:) 0 -

About 10 years after one of the GB WD40 arguments I decided to switch to WD40 just to be cantankerous. Still using WD40 and still ZERO problems. 0
