IDPA in Illinois

I’d really like to further develop my shooting skills by engaging in competition. Since I live in an urban area, seems IDPA may be more practical for me than USPSA or IPSC.

Can someone give guidance on getting started? I’m in Chicago and there doesn’t seem to be much of a competition community around here.

    I can't give you much guidance on where to find a match in that area, but I can tell you that you'll have a good time at the shoots!
    Have you tried looking at the IDPA website to see if they have matches in your area?  
    When I first started (14 years ago) I was very intimidated but everyone there was real patient and provided lots of good instruction and advice.  Do NOT expect to do well in your first few matches.  It is as much a mental game as it is anything else, once you get comfortable your skills and scores will improve. 
    Practice your draw (from concealment!) at home with an unloaded firearm.  Be sure to do it in a room that folks can't look into, don't want to scare the neighbors!
    Draw like your life depends on it but re-holster slowly, safely, and deliberately.  
    Have you had any kind of firearms training?

    Firearms and Illinois are kind of like oil and water these days. The Democratic Mafia that controls Chicago seemingly controls the State through the central government in Springfield as well. However...
    McHenry County has a presence in the handgun competition arena:
    There are others but it will be much simpler if you just do a search for the sites and read them yourself. I typed "Chicago area IDPA competitions" without the quotes of course. Find any and all then bookmark those so you aren't searching for the same subject constantly.

    You might want to look into the "Conservation Club of Kenosha Cnty."  It's on Rt. 45, S. of 50 up near Bristol.

    I travel and shoot competitively when time permits.


    Mostly USPSA but started shooting IDPA in 2002.

    I prefer to use:

    PractiScore combines iOS and Android match scoring apps with optional web services for match registration, match information, online squadding, online payments and results viewing to make a match directors job as easy as possible.


    However some ranges use:

    MatchSignUp


    Illinois is in USPSA “area 5” - you can checkout their FB page and see what ranges ppl are talking about. If a range hosts USPSA it probably hosts IDPA as well.

    IDPA and USPSA are cousins that don’t get along, though they have much in common.

    I just show up & shoot but I find some of the IDPA rules off putting compared to USPSA.


    If you shoot a Glock I would recommend a GSSF match as a great starting point. Its a great intro to fundamentals of shooting any type of match. They reward accuracy.
