used to buy a semi load of diesel at a time and pay for it..the co-op would store it and i would haul it out to irrigation engines as needed...co-op would never do this for gas..you had to take delivery ...????... after a couple of year of storing some gasoline on the farm i quit doing that ..nothing but a thief magnet 0 -
I had an 81 Rabbit Diesel.
Top speed down hill was 63.
I could fill up the 10 gallon tank on Sunday, drive the 3 hours to school in Indy, drive all week, then drive back home Friday night.

Bought a new Rabbit Diesel in 1979. Was putting on the miles and tired of the '70's gas hogs. When it was new I was getting 50+ mpg. That was a non-turbo charged diesel, which is a real dog in a road vehicle...it was all of 48 horsepower.
If you pulled out onto a 50 mph road, you had to have a mile of traffic free space just to not get into trouble.

A guy I worked with had a Rabbit diesel. He drove like 70 miles to work each day. One day he stopped at a light and the engine did a runaway. The valve seals had worn so much that it was sucking engine oil and would not shut off. It finally threw a rod up through the hood. I think it had about 350,000 miles on it. 0 -

Way back in the early 70's, I passed a Cadillac pickup truck on the highway! I thought I was just imagining things and blew it off to some kind of flashback from the previous decade.
My dad loved VW's and owned about every variety that was available during the late 50's into the 60's. He had the pickup pictured above that looked like a cut off bus. Used it as a business truck and hauled all kinds of supplies and even Christmas trees that he sold on our lot. I enjoyed riding in that truck sitting on the center engine cover ! Warmest place to be in that cold cab during the winter! It was definitely a truck ahead of its time with the drop down side rails and tailgate!0 -
Back in the 80s my brother had a Toyota F40 Land Cruiser.It was the fashion at the time to put big,huge tires that looked like tractor ag tires on them.He wanted to show us how deep of mud it would pull through even though we tried to talk him out of it we ended up stuck in a giant mud hole.While we were trying to figure out how to get the Toyota out,a couple of good ol boys had been out cutting a load of stove wood.They were driving a Chevette that they had made into a pick up using an ax.The mighty Toyota was pulled from the mud by a Chevette home made pick up. 3
