Mahindra Max 25 engine question
I bought this little tractor new in 2014. I only have about 50+ hours on it and it has done everything I need. It has a Mitsubishi 1.3L 3 cylinder diesel. It ran fine when I put it in the barn last November but now when I try to start it,
it fires a few times when cranking then just quits firing. This is cranking with the throttle at idle. If I move the throttle up some it doesn't fire at all. Has anyone had a little diesel act like this?

I have seen the fuel rack stick on the off position more and more with today's crappy diesel. I think I worked on one of those tractors once for that very issue , I had to remove the side cover from the injection pump, and wiggle the fuel rack and free it up. They varnish up while setting, due to the above mentioned fuel. sometimes they also get water in them and rust up. I just had to work on my IH 500 crawler for that exact issue. It's been setting for two years, and I had to remove the top of the injection pump, and free up the fuel metering valve.
Do you run any type of diesel additive? I find that automatic transmission fluid works well, and that's what i use. A couple quarts in ten gallons or so. You can't put in too much.0 -

It's a fuel issue.First thing to do on any diesel exhibiting these problems is to...CHANGE THE FUEL FILTERS! Don't waste your time on any diagnostics until you do this FIRST. The very first thing any diesel mechanic is going to to is...change the fuel filters! I used to work in the heavy excavation business many moons ago, and when stuff sat, or it got cold, things wouldn't start. The very first thing the mechanics would do was...change the fuel filters. Every time I've ever had a diesel issue, the first thing the mechanic asked was if I had...changed the fuel filters. Most mechanics won't even touch your equipment until they...change the fuel filters.See the trend here? Change the fuel filters. I've gotten so thoroughly sick of being told this, the very first thing I say to a mechanic is...I CHANGED the fuel filters already, okay???.
Then make sure you've got good diesel in it. 99% of all diesels which ran the last time but won't run now is the result of a fuel issue, and the first thing to check is...the fuel filters. Not just check, but replace.Okay, I think we've got that point driven home, right? The next thing to check is the oil level. (sounds dumb, I know, but...) Many diesels now have to have enough oil in them to run the injector pumps...for the fuel. There might be enough oil in the engine to lube it, but the injectors won't work because the oil level is low. If all that is good, then you'll have to start chasing the fuel back from the injectors. Meaning, break open an injector at the head and see if you're getting fuel, then work backwards from there. By this point you will have already verified the fuel pumps because you had to prime the fuel filters...when you changed them. <wink>

I have that same tractor and it did the same thing you are describing. It was a fuel issue. Changed filters, drained tank, fresh new fuel and runs like a champ. 0 -

I'm no diesel guy, but have, on occasion, run into issues on my old 6.0 F-250 as well as working with-and trying to learn something at the same time-on diesel Kubotas, Steiners and Ventracs with a friend who is a 40+ year Master Diesel Mechanic. He always starts with what has been set forth above, after first making sure there's fuel in the tank. 0 -
Change filters, add some algae killer,, don't fill your tank full if you barely use your tractor. 50 hrs in 6 years, your diesel got algae from sitting so much.
Cut your old filter and you'll see a lot of black stuff, thats algae. Its hard to get rid of sometimes but changing filters and the algae killer i mentioned is the first step.

Have you considered changing the filters, draining the old fuel from the system and installing new filters with fresh diesel?

Thanks for all the replies guys. My dealer is 80 miles (round trip) from me so I ordered two and hope to have them tomorrow. At least the filter is easy to get to. 0 -
Some of the people here will know a lot more about it. When I changed the filter on my 35hp diesel tractor I had to to loosen some fittings and prime the system in order to get it to start. Mine was running fine I just changed to filter proactively. 0 -
Don't forget to change the fuel filters. I've heard this is a critical maintenance procedure.... 0 -
