How old is to old of a tire for use?

 I bought a 93 Corvette last summer and my mechanic did an oil change and said the tires are 7 years old. Might think about changing them he told me. They have 5k on them so tread is not the issue. What say you guys and gals? About 1k I am thinking to replace. Drive it twice or three times a month.
