Barrel Band ?

Quite small and heavy.  Held on to stock with a screw from the bottom.

Any help is appreciated

  Krag Jorgensen carbine, maybe?

  Thanks and checked it out.
  This on is smooth on the outside whereas the Krag is contoured

  That's what I found on every modern military rifle band I looked at too. I'm thinking this might be older, like for a muzzle stuffer rifle, or maybe even a pistol.

  I am having a buddy send me his Smith Carbine--think they look awful similar.  I'll do a comparison 
  Never thought of a pistol good idea as well
