Ocelot in the backyard a few minutes ago

Looked out the kitchen window and spotted a grown ocelot in the backyard - with very dark colors.  The wife standing at the sliding back door watched it as well.  We saw each other about the same time and it walked back to the fence, along the line to the corner, keeping an eye on us, then sat upright at the base of the fence and jumped to the top of it, sat there a moment and crossed to the other side.  What a thrill that was.

  I've been told there are no large cats in Va. Well, this was on my front porch.  The cat is eating kibble from a feeder, which dumps out at the corner of the box. The box is 25" tall, 36" long & 18" deep. The door it's walking past is 36".

  Some years ago deer hunting in SW New Mexico about 40 miles above the border, I spotted a dark cat in a private ranch road.  I knew the owner and knew he had only dogs.  I got about a 30 second look at it.  I would have identified it as a jaguarundi, except I knew I was something like 800 miles from the south tip of Texas, the only place they are seen in the US.  I will never know what that cat was.
