While me abnormal mass / brain tumor was shrunken significantly and appears to now be calcified and not currently an active threat it is considered inoperable based on its sub arachnoid location at the top of the brain stem - cutting into the area would apparently kill me...
The sledgehammer course of platinum based chemo and a prophylactic targeted administration of radiation appear to have had a positive effect at least as far as the brain tumor goes...
And while I am not dead - or not quite dead - or not dead yet - my immune system is not and may never be normal or fully functional...
I sympathize with your buddy - many folk simply don't understand that while chemo and radiation and surgery may halt or slow the cancer and provide additional time amongst the living - the sequelae of long term intractable degenerative side effects that result from these treatments can be as detrimental and crippling as the cancers themselves...
again your buddy has not yet succumbed to the cancer and the treatments have given him more time and perhaps hope - he is in no sense cured - it's not a magic bullet that once delivered leaves him recovered or back to his former self or fully robust and healthy again...
to varying degrees he will have to deal with a veritable cornucopia of unpleasant and nasty essentially permanent detrimental health conditions...
he and I and others like us present a difficult puzzle for the doctors as putting humpty dumpty back together again is neither easy or viable and often does not present a ready solution or path to improvement - no large case history that presents some immediate options for care or treatment...
but then he or I or others like us could be dead - in fact should be dead so things could be worse.
For what it's worth I will include him in my prayers and in my positive thoughts...

first one left him in coma for months, that was about 10+ years ago, they say he now has/had a second one, but after talking with him he thinks it is the first one that has just regrown, after his second operation they again claimed they got it all. all we can do is wait and see, he has finished his chemo last month, but as you stated mike he is the first to admit he is not the man he once was, nor even the one he was last winter. In his current state it will be a very unlikely he survives the virus if that is what he indeed has. His outlook is very positive at this point and he looks upon the last 10+ years as borrowed time anyway. his biggest fear is passing it on to his other family members moreso than himself having it. It is tough but with the medical issues we both have had over the last few years we have "said goodbye" to each other quite a few times only to come through and struggle on, we can only hope for the best 0 -
That's what bothers me...
I don't particularly care one way or the other about covid 19 / corona / the bat flu...
After what I have been through and what I deal with day to day I just cannot get that worked up over this pandemic - as others have noted there is a bunch of stuff that could kill me on an average day...
But the concern - not that I might get sick and die - the concern that going about my business I might contract the virus and pass it on to others who are comprised health wise - that I might be a danger or threat vector or passer of plague does concern me greatly.
If going out and about and doing needful things carried a risk for me only - that would be fine by me...
But the thought that while trying to help others or simply get out of the house I might cause those I wish to assist to become sick or die - that I cannot abide by...
It's one thing to decide to roll the dice with my own mortality - it's another to do so at the expense of others.

well he got his results back today, negative on virus, and his last brainscan was in. They say they got all the tumor and minimal scar tissue/damage. got his good to go till next time diagnosis...... 0 -

I just want to chime in here that I had testicular cancer in 2012. I had a unilateral orchiectomy and followed that up with 4 months of PLATINUM based prophylactic chemotherapy. Specifically Cisplatin combined with Etoposide.......I decided not to add the Bleomycin because of the detrimental effects to the lungs. Although the process was unpleasant, I am now cancer free. No sequelae. Edited to add.......Mike I know your cancer was/is much more severe than mine......not trying to compare. I'm just saying that platinum based chemo is survivable.0 -

Make sure you get yearly checkups and let your doctor know what chemicals you were exposed to. They are listed on line. 0 -
I tried to locate a couple of my best Air Force buddies earlier this year. Online search found them both. One passed Jan. 2000 and the other passed Oct. 2017.
