Chicken chasing

Got up this morning and started my small farm chores. Still have the young chickens in the coop needing fed and watered twice a day.


Well, yesterday I moved it to make opening a pen gate easier. Forgot I hadn't installed the latch on the small back door. So, this morning the door was open. Only 17 chickens in the coop when there should be 18.


Assumed the heeler probably caught her and she was a goner. Nope, walked around the barn with him following me. He flushed it out of the weeds, caught it and was bringing it to me. Told him to drop it, which he did.


I feared the bird was injured, but noooo, I was off to the races chasing a half grown chicken. Finally got the fish net out of the side by side, caught it and the wayward chicken is back in the coop.

    Had to laugh reading that. Neighbor behind me has an escape artist hen that prefers my backyard. First couple of times, I got a cardio workout with the fishing net. Then one time, mom and dad came over with their youngest, he's about 3 1/2. Three adults chasing a stupid chicken around the yard, and the little guy calmly walks over to her, and picks her up! Every time since, when the hen sees him walking towards her, she just stands there waiting for him.
    Now I just call, and tell them to bring the "chicken whisperer" over, and a half dozen eggs. :)

     a never ending thing around here but I tossed in the towel many years back on chasing them 
        we have just a guess 20 or so chickens , two turkeys ,two guinea, two geese,about 6 or 8  assorted ducks ,   now we have a group of  three  chickens (rooster and two hens )  and a group of three ducks refused to go back in the pen  we  let  all of them run the yard a lot  until we get a garden planted   they well , most all go back to the pen and chicken coup at dark . 
     I  gave up trying to chase them months ago  they have learned to just circle a large  pine tree(s)  or the bushes so they just stay out  they have access to shelter in other out buildings   the cats and  dogs do not bother them even the local ( real close ) coyotes do not mess with them  , the skunks and raccoons and opossums do steal eggs though ( along with the cat food ) the skunks are a story in them self .

    Grandson #3 has decided he is the chicken farmer. We feed, water and check for eggs everyday. The layers and their rooster buddy are totally free roam. They have their own coop but choose to roost in a tree nearby. They even roost there in sub freezing temps. I feed them a large amount of scratch in the winter to keep their body heat up.


    Presently they are laying in the seed spreader in the barn. I have nesting boxes and a coop for them, very rarely used.

    I read a report where a farmer was being interviewed by a reporter who had heard that the farmer had developed and was raising chickens with 4 legs. The reporter said “Imagine that, four drumsticks. How do they taste?” To that, the farmer replied “ I don’t know. I can’t catch them!”
