I thought I read they were a 10% market share but even if much larger wouldn't some of it eventually resolve logistics to get to other packers who may be able to add shifts?0 -

Smithfield has had 1 pork slaughter facility close that kills 18,000 head per day in Sioux Falls South Dakota. They have closed 2 processing plants that produce hams, bacon, sausages, etc. Smithfield still has at least 7 or 8 other slaughter plants. Tyson has closed 1 pork slaughter facility in Columbus Junction Iowa that kills 10,000 head per day. Tyson is under pressure to close their plant in Waterloo Iowa after over 100 have fallen ill to the virus. That plant kills around 20,000 a day
Most, if not all of the pork slaughter plants in this country are already running at capacity and cannot harvest additional hogs. It is not as easy as "adding another shift." It takes real estate and brick and mortar to build coolers to cool the carcasses. In addition to that, and the bigger problem is, that there are shortages of workers across the industry as it stands. It would take around 1200 workers to add that shift.
Just the 2 plants that are not running will leave around 500,000 head un-harvested in 3 weeks time. (They run 6 days a week. ) The sows in the farrowing barns will not stop have pigs, the pigs in the nurseries will out grow that and have to be moved to the finishing barns. The 320 pound hogs that are ready for market need to go somewhere. That's a problem. The bigger issue is the unfilled contracts for the pork products. That's one of reasons the shelves in the grocery markets are starting to show signs of not being resupplied.
Yes, Smithfield exports pork to China. And Europe. And South America. And South Korea. All of the packers do. Tyson's plant in Perry Iowa exports it entire production run to Japan.
The same scenario is playing out in the beef and poultry industries as well.

my youngest son works at a hog farm I have not really talked with him since the whole thing started (shut down ) I have to ask him how there place is doing . I know he is working they have to keep producing food 0 -
