I would put that in a review, if nothing else say he is really lacking in customer service, with little to no compasion for customer.  I can possiblly  understand a response like that when you cancel  on your own, but under the present situation and all the bans there is no reason for that type response.  you could send him a message saying you have the virus and are gonna come stay the weekend to get away from the family.........

I also cancelled a VRBO reservation a short time ago, but I got a full refund, including the booking fees. I know that VRBO had written policies about how much you get depending on the lead time of when you cancel, but it also is very much up to the landlord's discretion. I'd contact the landlord directly and see what he says. If he turns out to be turd in the punchbowl, he just lost a regular customer, I'd guess.
(I couldn't tell when reading your post who exactly you spoke to, someone at VRBO or the landlord. Forgive me if I guessed wrong.)

I too would hammer him in my feedback.
We also rented a VRBO for the now cancelled Horse Races down in Hot Springs, AR.

Pre-Pandemic - the realtor renting the place cancelled on us, thinking it was already booked outside of the VRBO system. A day later called back and said it was still open and had us rebook it through her saving a couple $ going outside of the VRBO system.

When we learned the races had been cancelled. Called her and cancelled. She had no issue giving us a full refund.

It seems as though Air BnB is issuing refunds.  We just learned that one of our concession events scheduled for June has been cancelled.  We cancelled our Air BnB for the event and were told we would get a refund but that it would take 30 days because of the backlog.  At ths point I am not holding my breath as I think they will run out of money before I will get my refund.

Yoga retreat at Echo Bluff here in Missouri was cancelled. Scheduled for June. Organizers said refund or keep for next year. I'm keeping for next year. Have reservations at nearby campgrounds. Will keep that and do a one week get away from the farm. Change of scenery will be nice.

They absolutely should have refunded. VRBO contacted us to see if we want to cancel and I said we are going to be there in June.
Guy is a jerk clown for doing that.

Short sighted...my dad rents a place on the Chesapeake every summer for two weeks at $1000/night, so a $14K rental....the property owner refused to extend cancellations even though we're under a declared emergency, so my dad chose to cancel his reservation. He's rented from this man for several years, and i don't see this guy easily picking up reservations at the last minute for the price of his rental. It's kind of a niche property.  I'd have thought he'd be more flexible considering keeping it booked is better then putting your clients in a position where they feel the need to cancel.  I told my Dad to cancel, I figure it will likely be available anyways to re-rent if the declaration is lifted by the end of June.  With the economy in the crapper not alot of people will be inclined to drop $1000/night.

I have a co-worker that is being screwed out of a $1000 rental on the Outer Banks in May.  The road to the OBX has been closed, no visitors allowed, so he can't even access the rental to occupy and the rental company is telling him too bad, so sad not their problem.  That's pretty crappy.  My rental in North Myrtle includes a 2/3 refund if a declared state of emergency (Fed, state or local) impacts occupancy.  I don't even have to make full payment until 30 days before the rental, so if cancel I'm only out $100.
