Holy TICKS!! This is Ridiculous.

Never seen so many ticks in all my life. Even just walking through the front yard, they're getting on everyone. I'm guessing it has something to do with the warm winter here in VA (no snow and hardly any freezing days).

Whatever the reason, I hate these things. I think I am finally going to let the wife get chickens to help eat some of them up.

    Good luck finding chickens this year. We are selling them faster than 5 hatchery’s can hatch them this year.

    Granddaughter found a tick on her arm last week while looking for deer sheds.  No one else has seen a tick and the below freezing temps the next 4-5 night should set them back for a while.

    If you can find any, get a couple of Guinea hens.  Noise is irritating, but they are tick vacuum cleaners.  And yeah, the ticks are out in Powhatan VA

    chme - I was gonna suggest guinea hens, too. But get more than two (like a six pack or more to hedge against loss). There was a youtube dude who trained his flock to come in to the coop every night. I thought that was trick so they wouldn't end up as 'yote feed. He was one of those off grid homesteader.

    My wife puts some kind of bug killer that she gets at Home Depot on our lawn about every 90 days and there are no ticks. I can't remember the last time I saw a tick around here.

    Possum's are good tick eaters as well.  Not only are Guinea's good at chowing up the ticks, they are also good watch birds too!  Any stranger comes calling they will let you know!

    The little tiny deer ticks are not to be messed with! A large percentage carry Lyme disease. They do not die out in sub-freezing weather. I do not go in the woods without spraying my legs with Off. My dogs have hade it twice. The only tick medicine that works is Bravecto.
    The little bastards are so small, you don’t find them until it’s too late.
    Though I’ve never had Deer ticks in my lawn, Triazicide works to kill wood ticks, fleas, etc. in my yard.

    Seen a couple of the little ones, but mainly the "Lone Star" ticks so far this year (see below pic). Heard of them, but never seen the little devils until this spring. Boy, are they FAST. Not like the dog ticks I am used to. I went to get one off my daughter's leg and it jumped and took off more like a spider than a tick. These are the one's that carry Alpha-GAL, which gives you a semi-permanent allegeric reaction to red meat.

    Lyme is bad all over, but it seems REALLY bad out your way, jimdeere. We got folks out that way, and they have lost two dogs already (caught it too late), and all four kids have had it as well.

    Alpha-Gal is awful and is spreading. If you're a meat eater (anything mammalian) you don't want it.

    Friend of mine has it. She reacts to food that is cooked on same grill with red meat. She has even reacted to grill smoke.

    It's a delayed allergic reaction up to 12 hours after coming into contact with red meat. She starts with itchy palms and torso, carries an epi-pen. Has had two anaphylactic reactions of which I am aware.

    Last year looking for morels evidently I picked one up.  It sucked good and finally when it fell off I found it on our tile floor and put it in a small jar.  It now looks like a dried out pea with an emoge face  :#

    For those that go where there are ticks- two products
    1.  Permethrin spray.  Take your pants, hang on clothesline, spray, let dry. Not for use on skin.  By the time tick climbs to your waist, too sick to bite you. Treatment good for about 10 washings.
    2.  Picaridin repellent- better than DEET. 


    Both are easy to find- on line or even at WallyWorld.
