Remember the big glass display cases in barber shops for customers shaving mugs?

Back when barbers, along with cutting hair, also shaved many of their customers, customers would have their individual soap and brush preferences, both contained in their preferred mugs.  These mugs were kept in the glass case that was quite large.  When you came in for your shave, your mug containing your soap and brush was pulled from the cabinet.
I can remember one barber shop that had the mug case.  Most shops didn't have the mug case so if I'm guessing right it was the high end shops that had the mug cases.  The name of the customer was below his mug.  I moved from that area many years ago.  I kind of wonder what happened to those mugs.

    Not many barber shops do shaves anymore.Someone told me they went to a barber shop in Charleston SC that did shaves.Hair cut and shave was 65 bucks.

    They went the way of those "Men's Adventure" magazines also found in genuine barber shops. One thing you can still get, though, is that unique barber shop smell. Remember this?

    Barber shaves ended when the fear of "blood-borne illnesses" (for which read HIV/AIDS) became more or less widespread. My guy said he could still technically do them, but would have to wear a gown, face mask, gloves - and a single-use razor. That was years ago, though, and by now the State Board may have outlawed them entirely. The gear, mask, and gloves thing sounds awfully current, though, doesn't it?

      ours still shaves back of neck and around ears, sideburns with a straight razor.  no protective gear involved........

    The biggest problem I have with my barber?

    I think he has a "stash" of grey hair behind him on the counter.  As he cuts my hair, he pulls some of the grey hair from his "stash" and throws it over my shoulder where it lands in my lap thereby making me think I have grey hair.

    Pretty devious of him, if you ask me.

    It's an astute observation.

    While I may be one of the younger members here (dob 1971) I have strong memories of the practice of being "blood brothers" in magazines and trade paperbacks and on rerun TV shows...

    In my youth I had a blood brother - this happened circa 1982 before aids and HIV and auto immune disease became well publicized...

    Back when they were still calling it GRID and long before it was labeled a "happy" plague...

    I imagine that the blood brother practice was systematically and universally removed from almost all media formats...

    I remember reading an article in boys life about how to commingle blood safely - how to sterilize a blade on your Swiss army knife...

    Who remembers blood brotherhood - who had a blood brother - when did this practice get erased from our culture???

    Just an itch in the back of my brain that I have been scratching at for awhile.

    One barber shop I used from around 1958 to around 1962, as a kid, had these shaving mugs.  but this was the high end, society type barber shop in that town.  It makes me wonder how I ever ended up in the high end shop.  Seriously.      :)
