Glad I hoard stuff

The latch on my spypoint camera case broke. Cheap plastic. It is like a go pro camera. I called them and they discontinued that particular case. Went out to my shop and started digging around. Found one made of stainless steel. The one on the case now is plastic. Needs some minor adjustments, but it will work great. I guess all those junk actions and yard sales, finally paid off!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know some of you probably are like me and have tons of boxes, full of screws, nails and other hardware. I told my son that, when his grandfather and I are dead, he is going to inherit an entire hardware store :D

      yep sometimes it comes in handy .
     I think growing up with very little and having to make something last . like a lot of you .  I stared keeping  buying up items at auctions and garage sales for almost nothing was a sucker for the give me a dollar or two for the whole box >> sure LOL 
    I told both my sons one day you will have the job and rewards of all the "junk" I have collected 
     both said sure dad we will have pay some one to haul it off to the dump . is whats  going to happen. 
    but over the years both have come looking for some part or piece they need

    And its the sweetest feeling when something breaks down and the replacement part is no longer available but you remember exactly where to find the one you hoarded 35 years ago...you retrieve, it, polish it, install it and it works!

    It seems most people today only know how to throw it and buy new - Repair, we don't understand how to fix stuff or use tools.

    I too hoard and save stuff . My son in law is always amazed when something breaks and I tell him I have the parts to fix it with. He was used to always buying new to replace stuff . I am from the old school .... if it breaks , fix it ! Still using stuff that my father saved 40 and 50 years ago . Heck most of my wrenches and sockets came from him and he died in 1978

    I have all that sort of stuff, too. The problem is I can't find what I need when I need it.

    Reminds me of me. Before anything gets scrapped, it is scavenged for parts and hardware. Fixed many things and saved countless trips to town.

    last year I needed a 'bolt stop screw' for a mauser, parts stores wanted $6 + s/h. I've got a lathe and LOTS of iron but no die for that thread, sooooo..........ebarf. for <$4 (shipped) I had 3 dies and 20 min. later I had several screws. gave 2 dies away (for future favores  ( ;-)  ).

    I keep everything that I'll probably never find when I need it. I love to find those multi drawer parts holders at garage sales. I once went to a farm auction where the old farmer must have went to the hardware every Saturday for his entire life. He had hundreds of baby food jars, cheese boxes, sewing machine drawers and coffee cans full of everything imaginable. There was so much stuff they started selling it table full at a time. I bought two tables full of tacks, brads, screws, nails, rivets, glaziers points, fuses, and just about anything you can think of. I loaded my pickup bed one layer deep for $10.00. If I ever need plow bolts, I'm covered.

    I've got a lot of stuff that I don't know what it is but I can guarantee you one thing if I throw it away today I'll need it tomorrow.

    I was working on my Weber grill yesterday & saw that I could use some parts. Well, they don't offer the "flavorizer bars" for that model any more (15 years old.) Flea Bay had the set for $300, no way. I also wanted small metal plates to cover the cheap tin  sparkers. So, I found a sheet of 1/16" stainless that I've had for at least 40 years. All fixed for zero.

    I have a box of the "whatever you need stuff". If friends or neighbors need something out of it, they can take it, as long as they replace it with something close to what they took, all is good. I've found that my neighbors have made use of the stuff I had, and I made use of theirs...

    It's nice to root around and find the bit you could mod in a pile where folks you know used to say "you should toss that mess out". Also being able to see "other" application later makes you need a larger place.
