A trip to the market
RICE! For the first time in a month, there was rice. I like rice, so that made my day. Frozen foods had made a return, including frozen pizza, so I bought two peperoni pizzas. Soda and beer, no problem. The shelves were filled with canned goods, with a limit of four cans each. Aldi has pretty good canned chili, so I picked up a couple of cans for chili dogs. Bottled water was back in stock with a limit of 1 case (24 bottles), and it was just in time because I was nearly out (the tap water here tastes awful). There was toilet paper and paper towels, although I didn't need either. There was no hand sanitizer and no liquid soap, or any soap that I could see.
Social distancing was being maintained and everyone was very polite. Nearly everyone was wearing gloves and most people (including myself) also wore a mask. Many people wore homemade masks which were themed; including Miami Dolphins, FSU, Mickey Mouse, as well as other clever designs. Americans can stay upbeat, even in the worst situations. All and all, it was a good trip to the store. Now I want my chili dogs.

Glad to hear you had a positive experience at the store Mark! Today I picked up my first online order of groceries at Walmart. I put the order in on Wednesday and the nearest date and time I could get it was this morning between 8 and 9 AM.
Received an E-Mail stating that my order was ready at 7:45 AM and I boogied over the 10 miles to get there. Pulled up to a special parking place that had about a dozen numbered spaces with a sign with a phone # to call. I only saw two other pick up shoppers and my gal was out with my 200 dollar order just as I made the call and opened the tailgate of my truck! She took a look at my drivers license from a 6' distance and unloaded all into the trucks bed. I asked if she was allowed tips and said only for a children's charity. I reached over her way through my open window and slipped a Clorox cleaned 10 spot into her hand without touching. I actually hope that she put that $ into her pocket! Those grocery store workers are all in harms way and being paid peanuts! God Bless her!0 -
I agree 100% about the grocery workers being under paid. Until the Army or the national Guard starts dropping off a case of MRE's at everyone's doorstep, one way or another, we have to go out and get food and the grocery store workers are as vital as police or fire fighters. 3 -
Just got back from a grocery run. (Essentials) Beer, celery, for my yet to be cooked whole chicken for soup, after the fact. Had to pick up a CR2032 battery for the remote for my TV sound system. Struggled without it for the last 4-5 days. Either too loud or couldn't hear anything depending on channel. No way to turn it off, etc. (Only way to control the system, no manual controls.)
Canned goods, pasta, rice, ground beef, etc. etc. Totally wiped out. You can tell people are long term prepping. I have been doing so for years, so i am not panicked. Wish I had more instant rice. Plenty of cook for 20 minutes rice. Didn't look any further at bread, TP etc. Got in, got out. Everyone was very Civil. I told the Cashier, how much I appreciated her being there. She smiled and said "Thank You."

Instant rice has been milled, then fully cooked, and then dehydrated. Essentially it is dried out cooked rice with all of the food value removed. When it goes into the pot all that takes place is re hydration, which is why it's almost always a sticky mess of tasteless goop. Even though a rice cooker will take all of the guesswork out of preparing rice, I just use a pot on the stove. Chicken and rice is my favorite meal, so now I'm set.Flying Clay Disk said:Ken, get a rice cooker. You'll never go back to that instant rice again! I tried to be innovative and think outside the box...
Bought a dozen boboli pizza crusts and 8 store brand pizza crusts...
Bought a dozen jars of pizza sauce and a half dozen McCormick Italian seasoning spice jars...
Picked up a dozen bags of shredded pizza cheese (5 cheese Italian blend)...
Picked up a dozen packages of sliced pepperoni...
Grabbed two giant bricks of Cabot cheddar cheese and several boxes of Ritz and saltine crackers...
A couple jars of Skippy peanut butter...
There were 5 boxes of red lobster Chesapeake bay biscuits and I took all of them...
No bread in the bread aisle but I snagged 2 Italian baguette loaves and one French loaf in the deli...
A couple packages of small silver dollar pork chops.
Two precooked shredded / pulled chickens from the deli...
A 10 lb bag of high end baking potatoes...
6 cans of dinty Moore beef stew for the dog and ferret -to mix in with dry food...
3 beefsteak tomatoes and 3 turning bell sweet peppers...
Crusteaz brand pancake mix and chocolate chip muffin mix...
2 boxes of bread maker mix (Italian white and Russian rye) ridiculous high priced high end name brand stuff - the only bread maker mix left on the shelves...
A dozen tubes of crescent rolls.
I think I did pretty good - with 2 exceptions all store brand or moderately priced items - and if you add it up quite a bit of bread if a bunch of types...

You can find liquid hand soap on Amazon,.....especially their house brand.

I went Weds and didn't see too many people. Stocked up on Dorito's, pork rinds, and hominy. Even bought a portion of a ham that was on sale. Place had eggs and milk , meat, bread . 0 -
Local grocery outlets seem to have almost anything you want except rump dressing, and any type disinfectant.
Another observation, very few items "on sale".

I have probably 20-30 lbs easy of long cook rice. Probably twice that in dried Pinto beans. Not hurting.

84, if you eat the rice or beans dry for breakfast, drink water for lunch, and swell up for dinner you will have it made.Works the same especially for oatmeal.Be very careful not to over eat at the morning meal.

Arkansas still doesn't have a stay at home order in place.
Went down to Mountain Home, AR earlier this week. The majority of the businesses were still open. Large chain fast food restaurants were drive up only and small places were closed. The antique stores were all open.
Stopped in Walmart to resupply. Shelves were filled and they even had 1 brand of TP on the shelf. Prices were normal. I only saw 1 employee wearing a mask. Customers were 50/50 on masks. I didn't wear a mask.
Walmart's eggs suck but they were normally priced - $2 and change. Our local Cash Saver grocery store had limit 1 on eggs and 18 packs were $5.75 (crazy!!!).

Just got back from an "Essential," beer run. Food Lion busy. I always pay attention to what people have in their carts. Multiple bags of potatoes, canned goods, etc. Can tell people are stocking for the long haul. Lots of carts totally full.
They had a bin of frozen Young Turkey Breasts at 99 cents/lb. Only about 7-8 left. Grabbed the smallest one available. (About 6 lbs.)
Rice wiped out even worse than last time. They had a few 4 lb. Bags of 20 minute boil rice at $8 last time, all rice gone this time. Pass. I have multiple contractor buckets of brown rice upstairs stocked with the dried beans. I did, like last time, grab a couple smaller packets of Rice with broccoli in a cream or cheddar sauce for .79 cents each. Grabbed another 8 serving soup mix of creamed potatoe/peppers and smoked sausage @ $2.99. Dried soup mix blends are a god send. Add veggies, chicken or beef stock, and go from there. Vienna sausage usually long gone, decent selection. On sale 59 cents each grabbed 4 to add to the excisting stockpile. I could live on about 1 per day, if i had too.
The store seemed to be down at least 60% capacity of staples. (If not more.)
About 50/50 mask wearers.

People are still panic buying and hoarding...
When snow is predicted or a few flakes start falling all the milk and bread and cheese and toilet paper gets wiped out...
Snacks and junk food (chips and pretzels and such) all gone.
Been observing this phenomenon all my life - I would stop by the grocery store on the way home from work and the parking lot would be full and chaos would ensue...
This pandemic has brought worse behavior to the forefront.
I saw one lady with 8 gallons of milk and a good two dozen packages of hot dogs...
Drinking 8 gallons of milk before it expires and goes bad seems unlikely even in a household with 5-8 people...
The dollar store and aldi have been hit hard but have not run out of bread or milk or cheese or toilet paper or ground beef...
It's panic buying and hoarding - it's a Pavlovian fight or flight response...
I also think with stay at home orders in place even the ugliest folk will get bored enough to have intercourse - and there will be a baby boom in 7-12 months..
The biggest complaint amongst the youth is slow internet and slow Wi-Fi due to super high traffic - kids on their phone and online 12+ hours a day...

Just finished a run to the market. My wife gave me a list and I was able get everything on the list. What I was surprised about was they prices. Everything except eggs was lower in price from I can remember recently. Even some meat was on sale. Got a prime rib for tomorrow. It seemed like everything I was looking for was on sale for 2 or even more per the regular price. Even gas was cheap $1.39 a gallon.
Still no hand sanitizer or TP. Can’t figure out where all they TP is going. I could see the store being out for a week maybe two but it is going on almost a month now with no TP in the store. Don’t need any already had a big pack from Costco.0 -

Mr. Mark started by mentioning that he had gone to Aldi's. Do other folks go to Aldi's as well? There are at least a half dozen Aldi's within a 20 mile radius of me, and there are always cars in the lot when I go past, so it would seem other folks shop there. I've stopped at maybe four different Aldi's and gone in, but I never got more than a few feet into the store. The smell in each of the stores was sooooo baddddd that it made me sick. One time even hurled in the parking lot, thankfully before I got back to my car. There were other folks shopping there, but I just can't handle the smell. Do all Aldi's smell so bad? 0 -

I have never been in a dirty/smelly Aldi. Where do you live? I could see smelly Aldi's in San Francisco because of the homeless pooping all over but I cannot comprehend an Aldi's as bad as you said so it might be a local management thing, or in this case a lack of management thing! 0
