This new unemployment benefit is just asinine.

There is some fine print with that. Up to an additional $600. Not to exceed current pay. I also believe it will be on a similar scale with what your individual state is paying you

The Presidential election is in 31 weeks.  No coincidence unemployment benefits were extended through to that point.  Odds are the $ 600 kicker will be extended to much closer to the election as well.
The longer the left can discourage people from going back to work, the longer the economy will be in trouble and the better their chances are of unseating Trump.  Right now Pelosi is doing her best to run/ruin this country by fiat, as she will not allow for a vote for any of this crap in the House.
If she is not brought under control, we may have to practice say odd word combinations such as 'President Cuomo'.
Or, on the odd chance the DNC does not realize Biden is brain-dead, 'President Coma'.

Everyone has their panties in a wad wondering what folks do and how much they make. Reckon I have been unfortunate only once.. when the Challenger Shuttle exploded and my job was  affected. We went on 32 hour work weeks for a few weeks. Then made medical supplies till the aerospace business came back.

True - each state has its maximum, also based on salary.  But the additional $600 works out to $15 per hour based on not working a 40 hour week.

Reality check.  Today is Thursday, April 9th 2020.  I became unemployed due to the China virus on 03/23/2020, with a return date ASAP when the crisis is over.   I have yet to receive my first Ohio State Unemployment check, I got ZERO so far, nothing.  I expect the extra federal unemployment "help" when elephants grow wings and fly.  I got emails telling me Ohio is as screwed up as a soup sandwich.  They are working hard 30 seconds a day to "fix" it.  Most likely with H1B Visa $9.00 an hour help.  These are the same folks that wrote the 737MAX software....

Something confusing about this whole federal thing is it seems the money is an advance against 2020 tax refunds?  I could be reading that wrong but from the pee poor Media reporting of the details of the bill that is the way I see it.  Let me know if I am incorrect.  The 2 trillion has to be paid by some one.  You and I know the next (D) POTUS will make dang sure we get to pay it back along with the bailouts for the buddies of congresscritters (D) and (R) alike.

that was my understanding Bruce, the $1200 due next week or so is an advance on next years tax refund........  lotta people are gonna end up owing and wondering why

No way!  Folks would just increase their withholding to make sure that they don't get a refund in 2020.
But, show it to me in black-and-white, & I'll take your word for it.

Probably not the folks who wrote the Max software, Bruce.
There was a call for people familiar with COBOL on the news the other day, as some of the software that is being used is, well, fairly old.  I never was much of a programmer, and used Fortran and then Basic much more than COBOL, but given a few weeks to scrape away some cobwebs, I am sure I could get to the point where I would be totally useless.

The $1200 stimulus check is an advance on a tax credit, and not against a refund. We have a CPA on our boards, but in a nutshell you get a refund when you over pay your taxes (for whatever reasons you allow that to happen), while a credit, is exactly that. You will be credited up to $1200 against taxes which you might owe. If you owed Uncle Sam $500 then that amount would be deducted from the $1200 credit and $700 would be sent to you.

This is a fair way to do it because if by chance you earned too much money last year to get a check, but lost your job this year, your loss of income might well allow you to get the credit when you file in 2021.

just to note; unemployment $$$ have to be paid back by your employer. If you get 'laid-off' and collect unemployment insurance, those $$ come from your employers u.i. account. your employer has to pay the $$$  back over time. if your employer goes 'belly-up' the repayment gets spread to the other employers in your state.

If you look at a paycheck, you too pay for your own unemployment to the state.  Feds get their hunk too.

I've asked that very same question to several professional tax people and they look at me like ....what ??  All they can do is speculate right now until all of the regulations are ironed out. As it looks now I just want Caesar keep what's his and let me keep what's mine. If one needs it then I say go for it  ;)

Yep and you would be surprised to see how many people are clueless on this factoid.
Businesses that have people on the payroll pay an unemployment tax and it varies by state. If the business has a history of laying people of and downsizing, they are taxed even more. In some states, the unemployment tax is substantial.

Just one of many reasons why manufacturing left the country. Add corp taxes as much as 38% and it gets worse. Thank goodness for GOP and Trump. They reduced corp taxes to 20%

My congressman said the stimulus was independent of whether you filed your taxes. Fed taxes have been pushed up into June.
The media as usual is lying to us about the stimulus. These liars post a far greater threat to us than the Chinese virus armed with rifles.
Debt: Well they are borrowing at ZERO %. People need to look at what has happened to debt from a historical perspective.
Hang in their Bpost, wish you well. Av gas is at an all time low.

I've been off since 3/16 and I haven't seen a dime either. 600,000 are out of work here as well.

Looks like 60,000,000 have filed for unemployment and if they can collect the almost 1,000.00 a week for as long as who knows, they will stay unemployed. When and if the media driven damdemic passes the gravy should stop flowing, job or no job.
