I want a K10
I was watching "Red Dawn" and I thought you know I kind a want a truck like Jed (my inner yellow neck is screaming). Did a bit of searching and I found the truck to be a Chevy K10 stepside made in 1978. Being in California I want one made before 1975 to skirt the smog. I don't know if I want one that's pretty but I know I want one without rot. I guess I can do without motor and trans unless I need one to pass initial inspection?
I know GMC made similar trucks (from looking online) and they seem to be cheaper than the Chevy. I wonder if the panels/beds are swappable?

Square body Chevy and GMC pick ups in good condition are demanding pretty good money around here. 0 -
During that time period many small parts weren't interchangeable between GMC and Chevy.....ie@ brake pads/shoes etc. etc. so you need to think mechanical also. 0 -
I owned a more than few back in the day always like them , here in Ohio the road salt eats metal with a non stop vengeance . I have replaced majority of sheet metal on several and painted them in the past as project trucks at the time I enjoyed and took pride in doing it how ever getting too old and lack of ambition any more ( and have two 69 camaros waiting to be gone thru )
Kaliforina normally has very nice car truck bodies ( most western south western states ) so finding a nice one in your area may be easy but as posted they are bring a good price now like a lot of cars when I was doing it they were just a "old used truck "

and GMC and Chevy as posted are basic the same the GMC's were suppose to be a upscale version to be sold at the like the Buck / Cadillac dealers
also a internal deal at GM many years ago the small trucks would be made and badge as chevy /GMC by the small truck plants ( pick ups ) and the large trucks straight and semi style ) made by GMC and badge chevy
I help build the old s10 plant in moraine oh was there from start of the plant to production started coming off the line gmc and chevy both went down the line same time

Yeah, well..........I want my 51' Ford stepside pickup with a 351 Windsor/C10 Auto, lifted, frame stripped and gloss blacked, 4" Oak bed, Kelly Safari's, white spoke mags, posi rear, captain seats, kicking stereo, JBL speakers etc. etc. back also. (You can keep the vacuum wipers.)
Yeah, that aint happening either.

At the plant the GM and Chevy roll off the same line and they slap different badges on them depending who they want to sell to. 0 -
Whatever you do don’t buy one with the Chevrolet 400cid. Those were garbage engines. Find one with either a 350 or 454. We had a brand new 78 Blazer with that 400 and had lots of friends with K series pickups with the 400 and had nothing but problems.

Best of luck finding any 70's Chevy/GMC trucks that are in decent shape. Salt from the Rust Belt got many of them. Since most were bought and used on farms as work trucks, life was tough on them as they were usually driven until not worth fixing. Others that did survive sold cheap and often used by high school kids as their first vehicle. No need to explain how that went. Then, as the price of scrap metal went way up in the mid-2000's, these trucks went to the scrap yard since they were worth more than could be gotten sold as parts. Once very popular in my area, now very few are still on the road.
I still have a 1986 Chevy K20, and it as at the end of its service life. Prior to that, I had a 1976 Chevy K20 (notice anything interesting here?). Anyone remember the fuel mileage on the full-time 4x4's? I occasionally hear people who want to go back to the "old" trucks that were so much simpler. Well, not me. The old trucks always needed something fixed or replaced, fuel mileage was horrible compared to newer trucks. Spent almost as much time working on the truck as driving it. As for parts interchanging between years/models, good luck there. They all looked similar, but many parts were very specific.
I wouldn't consider buying a truck missing the engine and transmission. Parts are very hard to find, if not impossible.
1973-79 trucks are the same body style. 1981-87 trucks are the same body style. 1980 trucks are on their own, cross over between the 73-79's and the 81-87's.

You and I are in agreement as I posted above, apparently we are the only ones that realize this problem, I owned both brands at one time (same year models) and it was a pain in the ass maintaining both. As y'alls know they made a crap ton of those trucks. I'm sure half rotted away but that's still a crap ton of them about. I also believe they're making tons of sheet metal these days. If I could I'd take a rolling cab with a good pink slip and replace the bed since I don't care. Ease of papering is more important to me. Hell I might as well look in to C10s.
Also I ain't paying $30K car show queen. Realistically I'd like a resto-mod. LS power and tranny combo. I'd be okay with mid '90s LT1/4 power plant (drop in a Camaro/corvette power plant). Not messing with a carb. Dents are okay. Hell cobbling together body panels from mulitiple rides is fine (just no rust). I figure if I want a step side I'll be looking for donors. I do wonder if the frame are different between the two?
Maybe I'll find a panel delivery truck to put on top of the K10 to make a Mini-Grave Digger before this is all over?

one of favorite are the old full size blazers I have replaced most all sheetmetal on a couple just to have one they rusted so fast around here .
as for the trucks I have 94 GMC 97 GMC AND 98 CHEVY 4x4 the 97 a GMC 4x4 I bought two years ago off a older fellow who kept it garaged and went to flordia every winter so the body looks great.
the old short bed chevy fleetside and step side used the same frame and a lot of the parts chevy GMC do interchange same engine, same transmission differentials, seats , sheet metal only the bling like grills badges and such were different you can dress it out to what you want chevy or gmc . just look at aftermarket parts they will list both models and same part number for countless parts int he same year models

I had a 84 K5 Jimmy and I loved it. Unfortunately it had an electrical issue that effected the EFI and a bit of rot in the back under the tailgate, a frequent problem. i contemplated switching it to a 4 barrel because two shops couldn't figure out what the EFI issue was. Sadly iI sold it because it let me stranded far from home once and cost me alot just to get it to limp home. At the time I needed it for dependable transportation. It was really cool though. 0 -

I watched that a few years ago, believe they called it the Alabama Army Truck. Same guy also got a hold of a surplus Humvee and had it out in the rocks / boulders. Worked pretty good.0 -
Has a 1979 K5 Blazer. Miss that old truck. Wish I never sold it, but family was growing and needed a 4 door. That truck hauled a lot of firewood, camping gear, deer and many beach fishing trips. 3 -
