Filing taxes
I have most always used H&R Block to file our joint-return, but I am thinking about using something like Turbo Tax, and would appreciate any comments about it.

Turbo tax has been a bait an switch operation for me. They keep adding niceties and charging you more, If you are one of those who like to e-file federal and mail in state separate, there is NO option to separate the two. If you file federal, Tubotax is going to e-file state income tax for you regardless of whether you already filed a state return by mail or separate e-file. Last year it cost me $165 for them to file both state and federal. Turbotax IMHO s&&^ucks.
Local preparers always cost always less.
This year I went and filed "Free File" and their "Free Fillable Forms" on IRS website and it cost me nothing and was simple.0 -
I have used TurboTax for the last 5 years. I buy it from whoever is cheapest like Amazon or Sams Club. About 65 bucks and that is all I have ever paid. Federal and state returns are painless if you have all your information ready to enter. Bob 0 -
i use a local CPA, she cost me a bunch but i think i get my moneys worth when all is said and done. 0 -
I have used turbo tax forever and love it. I use the free one now as my deductions are few and far between. 0 -
$50 for H&R Block. Last several years. (About broke even.) Each time.

We've had good luck with TaxHawk these past several (5+) years. We do e-file and the federal return is free, the state return is about $10-12. Some years we get (or find online) a coupon to use with the state payment. Cannot complain about their service.Big Al (even sent us a notification for our 2018 return that, if we amend it, we could get more back. Hard to beat that!)

I tried turbotax once, didn't like it. They made me download their software onto my computer, which is as archaic as the abacus & pencil I previously used. I switched to Express1040.com (on the IRS approved list); you log on to their website & do your work there. The questions guide you through the appropriate screens, & it's difficult to mess up. It's inexpensive, & they store your data from 1 year to the next; if you have capital gains carryover, it remembers that from one year to the next. 0 -

I used credit karma and paid absolutely zero. Had my federal return in 10 days. State return took longer as they didn't have my state downloaded. Received mine today but it was for a different amount then I anticipated. Sent them an email this morning asking why. They will also back you up 100% with there own tax lawyers. I've used them the last 2 tax seasons. I used some other tax services in the past like H&R Block but didn't like their bait & switch tactics. 0 -
You are doing something wrong. TurboTax lets you efile for free. It does not automatically efile your state taxes which normally incurs charges. efile the Feds, print and mail the state. It's that simple.BUT, TurboTax seems to get more difficult to use every year, not for filing, just for entering your data and understanding what TT wants you to do.

I bought the CD last yearand Turbo tax went and completed my state data along with the federal . I actually contacted these people and they said zero separation. If I E-file Fed they are going to file may state the minute I hit send. Granted they did not charge me extra to file state with the package I purchased.
Starting this year, I e-filed myself. Why should I pay someone to do my taxes in addition to having to send govt a check.
I do think turbotax would be great for small business and a couple who have a business at home, but not for individuals and married couples with more than 2 incomes filing joint.0 -

Always used a CPA when I had a small business. Since I retired, I have had my taxes done by our area's Council On Aging organization. They have a group of professional volunteers doing senior taxes for free.
Even though my taxes are a lot easier than they once were I like to have them done by folks who keep up with all of the new tax laws that crop up every year.0 -
