Ruger PCC 9mm Carbine - I'm now the "Cool Uncle"

I think I posted this here before, in another thread, but I can find it...

TLDR summary - Sent a Ruger Carbine and 3 "glocks" to my Sister & family.

I called my sister who lives in Michigan, a couple weeks ago, to discuss current events (Corona Virus etc). My 2 nephews who are studying engineering are home from College for the rest of the school year. Niece is 16 and is also home. Both my Brother in law and Sister are working from home. The are both engineers and republicans.

After discussing current events and the progress of the new home they are having built, I asked my sister Does my Brother In-Law own a gun?  She said no, and that she's never wanted one in the house after what our Dad did with his shotgun (killed himself when we were teenagers). She further told me that her thoughts on gun ownership have changed and now she wants a gun - "desperate times call for desperate measures." She's been seeing groups of people hanging outside their rental house, late at night, and is weirded out by it. If something happens they have no means to defend the family other than a baseball bat and wasp spray.

I told her that I have a large gun collection and will put together a care package to send to her to include a rifle. She asked "You can do that?" I said sure - I'll send a rifle to a local gun dealer in your area plus send ammo directly to you.

Well, I went through my gun safe trying to decide what to send. I have a ton of handguns, but Michigan has lots of steps involved for new gun owners to acquire a handgun. With a rifle or shotgun, a new gun owner can pick it up immediately from a gun shop after completing the 4473 and background check, no registration required. I narrowed down possible guns to a Windham AR15 Carbine, Ruger 10/22, Winchester 94, and/or a Remington 870. Sleeping on it, I thought the Ruger 10/22 would be the easiest for everyone to operated. With 25rd mags, they can spray down an intruder. Problem there is it's not a good cartridge for Self Defense.

The next day I called some shops in her area, I learned everyone was sold out of just about everything defensive to include shotguns. One shop pointed me to a kitchen table dealer who advertises on facebook.
I talked him and he agreed to do a transfer. Plus he would give my sister and brother in law, a short class on gun safety.

Thinking more on guns to send, I decided on a Ruger PCC 9mm carbine. The controls are almost identical to a Ruger 10/22. It's in a defensive caliber but is not as complex as a AR15. It should be easy for men, women, and children to fire. I transferred it to them through an Arkansas dealer. I also put together a care package to include 600rds of 9mm (pictured below) and 8 Glock mags.

Being that I've been a horrible Uncle over the past 10 years while overseas (missing birthdays and Christmas's)- I also sent 3 Polymer 80 Glock 26 kits for the kids to put together. They're all engineers & they ought to get a kick out of building their own ghost guns. My brother in-law can get them registered with the local PD once things are back to normal. I added an UpLula mag loader to the box and shipped it last week.

My brother in law sent me this pic, of the care package. He stated that, according to the kids - You're now the "cool uncle."


Lastly - since I'm spending $ like I have a money tree out back, I picked up a Ruger PCC 9 carbine for myself. Wanted to be able to answer any of their questions plus have a matching "family gun."
Shot it for the 1st time last week. Shoots / handles like a Ruger 10/22. The ghost ring sights are really easy to use and I was hitting clay pigeons off the ground at 25yds (off hand) without evening trying. Ugly looking but a Fun Fun gun!!!

Here's one of their slides (mounted on my frame) for the polymer 80's I sent them.
I think my camera fish-bowled the front sight. The slides were supposed to come with RMR plates and screws. Emailed the seller and he replied, that he'll send them on once he has them in stock...
Lastly, talking to my Sister - she stated, the whole family will take firearms training.
Also it turns out that my brother in is friends with a guy that owns a local shooting range.

    if you would tell me a little more about polymer 80's,  my son has a Glock 26 , those  polymer 80's frames might be something he would be interested in learning more about

    I have a worked Marlin Camp 9. It will get the job done.

    My only suggestion would be to add a barrel mounted light.

    if you would tell me a little more about polymer 80's,  my son has a Glock 26 , those  polymer 80's frames might be something he would be interested in learning more about


    I was chatting with my best friend growing up about these. He loves to shoot and is working on a collection of "paperless" firearms. The Polymer 80 frame has no serial number and can be had cash and carry if you look for them at gun shops and gun shows. Mine are all on my credit card plus I post about them on forums.

    Here's part of an email I sent him and my BIL:

    In general, these Polymer 80 kits are based on Glock Generation 3 9mm handguns. Glock is now on Generation 5. Glock's patent on the Generation 3 pistol expired which allows these kits to exist.

    Here are the complete kits I bought for my niece and 2 nephews. As you can see there really isn't anything cheap about these kits. A used PD trade in Glock costs significantly less. 
    These specific kits come with everything. You can piece these together (possibly cheaper) but then you need some additional tools for assembling the slide. Specifically a channel liner tool.

    I followed this video for "milling" my P80 G26:
    At 9 minutes he mentions to make sure the rear ears of the frame are correctly in the jig. That is a big point.

    Here are detailed instructions from Polymer 80. It's worth reading through them to make sure you don't cut off the wrong part of the frame. the above video goes into more specifics.

    If you totally screw something up - cut something off you shouldn't have, you can always buy stripped or complete gen 3 Glock 26/27 frames from Gunbroker.

    Here's my G26 completed. I bought this one 1-2 years ago from:
    It originally came with a stainless barrel. I swapped it out for a $35 black barrel from:
    I also added a set of AmeriGlow Hackathorn night sights bought on sale at Primary Arms.
    I coated the outside of the barrel, frame rails, and slide rails with automotive anti-seize. That really got things moving correctly in the gun. Glock uses a Gold anti-seize on their slides.

    A nice showing of concern for your family and a truly noble gesture BUT throwing some guns at the problem isn't a real solution.
    Those folks not already "prepared" are just as likely to do the wrong things or not be able to do the right things at the time immediate action is required. My general feeling is that anyone not already and adequately armed, supplied, and trained is a lost cause.

    I mostly agree with you there but some folks are late bloomers when it comes to this stuff.
    I think this was a good wake up call for people that are oblivious. Sometimes a little push is needed.

    My Son in Denver, who has been trained in Firearm usage by me, has indicated he "wished he owned a firearm at this point." (Pretty sad really.)

    I told him, "We all set our Priority's Son." I believe he is now learning a valuable lesson.

    When discussing my Will over the last few weeks, and my disposition of my Firearms collection, he indicated the desire to own multiple firearms that I explained to him, would make him a Felon in CO. Like the M1 Carbine. He has no clue on the legalities of the State he decided to settle in.

    Told him, I would like to leave him my entire collection, but that he would inevitably get screwed by doing so. No way to secure it either.

    I put together a short little 1 minute video on the basic operation of the Ruger PC 9mm carbine for the family.

    It really is a fun gun to shoot. No recoil and the sights are right on. I plan to make another video on how to clear failures. Problem there is I've yet to experience 1 in about 200rds. Only way I can make it jam is load fired cases into the magazine.

    Little update.
    The first Polymer 80 Glock has been completed. Got a text with a picture of it last night. I'll call them today and get some more feedback.

    Got to shoot a friends at the range last week. He put a red dot on it. My first 3 shots all touched at 25 yards. I want one.

    I experienced my 1st failure to feed (nose up) with the Ruger Carbine the other night. It was round 30 out of a 33rd Glock mag.
    Will see if I can replicate it or eliminate it by down loading the 33rd mags to 29 or 30.
    Probably needs a cleaning.

    Just bought the Identical carbine in .40   I upgraded the recoil spring and plastic clip on the buffer to the stainless steel clip. Not a hiccup yet.  Rumor has it the extractor goes out so that is the next upgrade.
