Are AR Receivers Becoming Scarce?
Feller came by today and bought a naked AR receiver. Said I am the only dealer in the area that has any.
Are they becoming hard to find? I wonder if I sold it too cheap!

Distributors like PSA have them listed as in stock (and at the old price), but you may be the only dealer with one on the shelf. Gun shops remain open in my county and the adjacent counties, but none of them are doing internet sale transfers. The shops are selling their own inventory and nothing else, and shipping times from distributors are slow. 0 -

Thinking back over the past 18 months, quite a few distributors, and a couple of manufacturers: Bushmaster and Panther Arms, have closed their doors. Now, with more limited product and fewer distributors, demand is suddenly at an all time high. 0 -
No problem here other than ammo and reloading supplies. Check Anderson's site. They make most of the lowers for everyone and I believe they make them for PSA.
ARs have not gone up at all here. No problem I know getting parts.0 -

The other side of here has quite a bit for sale,.Completer lower halves are only selling for 220+ for Rock River and other decent good mil spec lowers complete..hard to build that cheap..I remember when Brownells had stripped lowers from Bushmaster [no blems] for 49.00 ea..parts kits were a little more than the lowers then

A naked lower is still only worth about $50..........just sayin 3 -
I've yet to buy a stripped lower online. Once you figure in transfer fee and shipping, that $30-$40 lower, becomes a $60 lower.
Most every Gun Shop I've seen sells stripped lowers for $50 to $60.

The difference now though is that the true manufacturers did not slow down to 'pre-pre-election' volumes but rather were willing to make their profits in smaller amounts while keeping production levels relatively higher. As a result, there have been very few bumps in the supply chain. Products have been and are currently available whereas the previous scare brought an absolute empty supply chain.
There are about 5 major manufacturers of lowers and uppers in this country. These are major manufacturers using high end CAM design and CNC manufacturing to produce all of the uppers and lowers for the consumers. These mass manufactured parts get special designs and private labeling by the thousands for large scale distributors such Palmetto. And technically, being labeled and sold as being 'mil-spec', they are all the same except except for the superficial designs. This brings the choices down to what style and design you like as opposed to who makes the best. Yes there are small flaws which escape some manufacturers on occasion but we're looking at the exceptions not the majority. You do get to choose between DPMS or Armalite designs.
Some AR uppers and lowers ARE manufactured by 'boutique' makers who want to pursue the profits by making everything themselves but in much reduce quantities, sort of semi-custom but not really. These are much smaller production runs, carefully quality controlled due to the lack of volume. And yes these will cost a lot more. The designs are specific to the makers ideas of what an AR should look like and how it should function. The segment of side charging handles was an example.
While I didn't conduct an exhaustive search, there are apparently plenty of inexpensive lowers available in that $50 segment. The segment of complete lowers opens up that price point to a lot of interpretation and a larger range of prices. Cheap parts kits for making your own complete lower are usually the low end mass produced parts made available at sometimes inflated prices. Common parts can be had in higher quality if you shop around. All-in-all though, a spring is usually still a spring when it's a common part. Customizing your lower with tapered pins, titanium parts and better triggers will increase your cost substantially. I had to pull together an extreme lightweight AR10 which consisted of all exotic parts to minimize the weight. Total weight 5-1/2 lbs. Total cost of parts alone = $3200.00So, you can still buy inexpensive lowers and assemble that kitchen table or garage built AR15 to your hearts content without fear of having the supply chain dry up.
