Medical supplies and ventilator numbers
In my recent conversations with medical personnel they are telling me that supplies really haven't been an issue. There were issues with mask, gloves etc. being stolen when this first started getting a lot of news exposure, but changing a few things, like locking more doors, keeping supplies in observable areas and other measures have mitigated that. They are making efforts to conserve supplies knowing that is could become an issue later.
I know some areas are having issues with supplies but, right now, it seems to be regional and not national.
Numbers of patients needing ventilators are climbing but haven't yet caused the need for rental equipment. I just got off of the phone with an ER doctor. He provided care to the first COVID 19 patient at his facility, since then there have been others and most are at home. He told me it takes about 4 days to get the lab test back and they've had to call people at home to tell them they've tested positive. He thinks it well get worse in our area in about 4 weeks or so.

I was just looking at the site Barzillia posted in another thread about projected numbers involved with COVID 19. According to those projections Indiana has the beds and equipment needed to handle what's coming in our state. Of course these are only projections and reality may be quite different. 0 -
One of my DILs is a manager for two units at a downtown Louisville Hospital. I spoke with her today and she told me she has extra help right now due to the cancellation of elective procedures, shutting down of some services, and limiting others. There are displaced nurses helping out on other units. A doctor at the Louisville VA told me the same was happening there. Due to some clinics being closed and other services cut back there are doctors and nurses reporting to the hospital and looking for something to do. In the mean time there are less total ER visits as non emergency patients are staying away. 3 -

I do not have the numbers for all the hospitals in the area. I was talking with a friend (ICU nurse) yesterday and she told me where she worked there were 11 patients on ventilators that had been diagnosed with COVID 19. That's high but well manageable, they could handle more. There are, IIRC, 35 or so ICU beds in that hospital.
It will get worse before it gets better but, right now, we should be able to handle it in our region.0 -
