Anyone Know Anything about this Knife?

I was just going through an old box of my Grandpa's tools, and found the below knife. It is "U.S." marked, thin light-duty blade, with a plastic-ish over-moulded handle. Just curious if anyone knows what it might have been issued/used for?

Note: Grandad was in the Navy, but I don't know for sure that's where it came from.

  WW2  or later knife that came with the spoon and fork for the mess kit.

  Issue mess kit.  They used to make us polish the things for inspections.  I bought a new set, took them downtown to a bumper shop, had them chrome plated, put away for inspections.

  Aha! Thanks, everyone. Mystery solved. Of course, now I must wonder what a LT on a Cruiser was doing with a mess kit. Probably just a souvenir collected along the way, I reckon.

  During WWII and in the European theatre ( I want to say Italy) a machinist NCO created a device that would turn pieces of wrecked aircraft into divided pocket one piece mess trays - involving a hydraulic press and a reverse impression template...

  It's an interesting story - there is footage on YouTube.
