Shotgun barrels....
I have a 20ga Wingmaster that my MIL gave me years ago. Since I am not a shotgun aficionado, most shotguns are street howitzers to me. That being said, this gun does house duty for my wife. For years I have been going to get another barrel that I can cut down. I have looked periodically over the years, and never like the prices asked for barrels, so there it sets. With everything going on now I am once again looking for a barrel, and still don't like the prices. Do people actually sell these used barrels for $150.00+, or are they dreamers? This is pretty much just a rant.

i too think the prices on shotgun barrels are way out of line. i have personally bought two shotguns in the past year with the barrel i wanted on them, swapped the barrel with the gun i had and resold the donor gun. once for the same money and once for a little more. depending on what you need you can, at times, buy a donor gun for parts for less than the cost of the parts. 0 -
If you check ser no. to see what yr it is..earlier models pre 75 ish, had the same rec size as a 12ga..later were smaller..earlier models hold a premium,.all you need to buy is an express bar. slug..for the limited duty it will see,it will work fine with any type of rds..slug,ooo buck or..but finding out what yr your gun is will help you find a barrel a lot easier..Loko 0 -
I have bought 870 Expresses for $100 complete. Cut it down and have her use "superlite" loads if she is recoil sensitive. Keep some real 3" ammo for you to use just in case. 18 pellets of OO or 41 pellets of #4 buckshot are good factory ammo. 0 -

Agree, asking way to much on barrels. A year ago a 37 Winchester barrel averaged around $85 and now $125-$150. Yes, a doner gun sometimes a better, cheaper option. If you are a collector and not just a shooter it gets worse. Seeing a lot of barrels everywhere with issues. Poor lettering, rust, pitting, bulges, missing and home made extractor parts, cut barrels and re-beaded to look factory length, etc. I am very forgiving of bluing issues but will no longer pay top dollar for barrels that have major issues. 0 -
LOKO mentioned barrel to frame type. Pre '77 20ga guns were built on the 12ga frame, it's called a Standard Frame. Then you have the LW, and LT. The barrels don't interchange between the 3, the barrel extensions that the bolt locks to, are all different. Pic of the extension, or just the date code off the barrel, it can be ID'ed. 0 -
there are several companies marketing Remington replacement barrels. mossberg sells a ton of rem barrels of all configurations. Hastings does too. you are wanting a short barrel i take it, and a "deer barrel" would fit your needs nicely. short--18-24 inches, cylinder to improved cylinder choke---ideal for in house use. another source is this. most gunshops take trades and often that deer barrel is taken in. it sits on the back shelf for years. offer the long barrel you have on hand as an even up trade. more than likely the LGS will make the trade as that deer barrel has been collecting dust for a long while. the vent rib barrel you thought about cutting down has more value to the LGS 0 -
Remington has been changing the dimensions of 870 & 1100 barrels over the last few years, for standardization. The only way to know if a specific barrel will fit on a specific shotgun is to try it. As this was a secret program, we can't tell anything from the serial number of the frame. 0 -

D-R, sure go ahead and bid. I appreciate the links Ikannes, and Neo put up, but I would like a barrel with no sights on it. If I got that barrel, I would unsolder the sights and remove them. I need to find out about that barrel in Neo's link, and see about sights on that one since there's no picture.

Ditch-Runner, Ikanne's barrel will not fit my receiver anyway.I collected a complete barrel set for my 1100 20ga Std. frame, before my son claimed it. The slug barrel alone is worth the total of the rest of them. If the barrel you have is a vent rib, don't cut it down. Too hard to find, and expensive when you do. Chamber size on an 1100 complicates finding a barrel. On an 870 it doesn't matter, 2.75" or 3", and they are a bit easier to find. A plain barrel, no matter choke or length would be your best bet, then cut to length for HD. GB and fleabay is where I found all my barrels. Take a look at Corson's Barrels. He's on the high end, and really proud of his stock. he does take trades, but for pennies on the dollar.Remington Model 58 20ga barrels will work too.

My barrel is a plain 2-3/4". It is original to the gun, so I don't want to cut it down. It looks like the ejection port is long enough to eject spent 3" hulls, would that be correct? 0 -

I agree check the auctions on GB and ebay the 20 ga barrels are a little tougher to find especially the large ring but they do show up and it also seems the plain barrels draw less attention and price .

X suffix is a 2.75" frame, N is for the 3" magnum frame. I know on the N frame, either barrel works. I'm not 100% sure, but I think you run into ejection problems with the 3" in the X frame (ejector & port size), but still works fine with 2.75" in the 3" chamber barrel. 0
