Is this an Ammo Storage Case?

Does anyone know what this is? A friend of mine was given this and told it was an ammo storage container from WW2.  I have seen some similar online but have not found one exactly like this. I have also seen some optics cases that are similar to this.  Thanks for your help.

  I looks like that to me. It is the same size and shape as the standard WWI German gas mask carrier, although the examples I've seen were made of pressed steel. Leather could have been a late war expedient.

   Should have some kind of marking underneath the lid in the corner .

  Your friend might have been told it was an "ammo storage container" because it does look a little like a container for the tubes that held rounds for the Spencer rifle during the Civil War.  But it is too short and too new for that.  There doesn't seem to be a reference in the photo that would help show us its size, but my best guess is that its was made to hold the lens of a camera of some sort.
