Virus Testing

Sorry to all for another post about this but I keep reading that here in the US, testing for the CV is not being done to any real extent unless you are one of those rich and famous types.   I know that tests cost money and without any kind of real medical procedure to effectively stop it, just being tested doesn't do much in the way of changing outcomes.   On the other hand, by not testing we have lost the true picture of what is actually going on and where it is happening.  Just because a state may claim they only have a low number of cases, they may in fact have an untested swarm of sick people.

What is everyone's thoughts on this.

    Always the same for the flu.  Many more cases that the ones reported.   Given that there was no way to anticipate the need for the number of Corona virus test kits needed it's to be expected that there are a limited number of test kits and judicial use is required.

    The cost to test everyone in the United States would be staggering. Even at a reasonable $10 per test (good luck). You'd be looking at over $3 billion. Chances are good that a lot of people; read that as tens of millions, won't even report for testing. We've got people on GB who refuse to reply to the census; you think they'll report as ordered for a virus test? Add in the fact that once crowded into a medical center for testing, people who were otherwise unexposed would suddenly be crowded in with hundreds of other people, some of whom might be infected. I had a general physical set for next week. I called on Friday and said there was no way I was going to any medical center until this flu scare ends. The receptionist agreed with me.

    I think the risk of mass testing outweighs any benefit.

    Unless I am missing something, this appears to be less lethal than the normal Flu, that goes around every year about this time. Perhaps I am missing something here?

    I read an editorial today that claimed, extrapolating the known statistics from the world, the US will run out of hospital beds on May 16.

    Not really missing anymore than the rest of us. So far a very small number of fatalities have been attributed to Covid-19. There is no way of telling how many in this country have had illness due to this virus. China has had an outbreak since late last year and the virus probably has been here since then. How many colds and flu cases have actually been corona virus? From all reports most people get very mild symptoms and it is indistinguishable from more common ailments. Saw an interview this morning of a young lady who had mild flu like symptoms and recovered. Since it was corona they called her a survivor. A rather dramatic description for someone who recovered from a stuffy nose and mild fever. A lot of viral diseases can become serious or even fatal in rare cases. I think it is prudent to do the same precautions that a reasonably intelligent person does in any flu season. Not out of a fear of death but because who wants to feel sick? Bob

    Go back to 2009, swine flu, people almost lost it, no bacon, at least that was the biggest concern.
    300,000 people hospitalized, thousands died, mostly children. Obama was president, no media generated panic.
    HUMMMMMMM.
    Who would benefit the most from a tanked economy?

    Our "great" governor has canceled all K-12 schools here for 2 weeks, Lowe's Hardware here is offering it's employees 2 weeks off with pay. Local ski resort closing due to virus, sheesh, they close this time of year any way, too warm to ski and people off the mountains start doing their warm weather projects and play. Pansies. I bet all of us have been exposed to some sort of flu many times in the last few weeks.

    My mother is 79 and her health isn't great. Like yourself, I'm far more concerned about her than for myself.

    IF  Human Corona virus is so new , why does my Clorox disinfecting wipes purchased mid 2019 have that listed on the label

    Corona viruses are a group of related viruses which have been since the 1960's, and probably long before that. There are dozens of different strains. The one we are concerned with is COVID-19. Remember, when you get a flu shot, you are being vaccinated against a particular strain of flu...not all flues.

    My mother is 79 next month, and in the same boat. That's where my biggest worry lies also.

    My mother is 88. Eye doctor called her today and canceled her eye appointment next week.
    Looks like all over 65 are going to be grounded.

    Ms. WT and I are mid 60s and are hunkering down.  We went out and grabbed a few necessities and will stay home for the next month.  We’ll reevaluate as time goes on.

    I am soon to be 65 , in a month . High blood pressure , had a heart blockage with needing a cath last year . Arthritis and some other minor issues . My daughter works for the university health system here . Trying to stay out of crowds and such based on her advice . She is currently working in one of the virus testing labs that the local hospital has set up . No known cases here ..... yet but we have a major Air Force base in town and several international companies with lots of foreign management traveling in and out . Just a question of time
