Swedish candle

Take a chunk of firewood, ~18” long that is rotten or punky. Excavate the rotten part down about a foot. Drill 1/2” holes around the diameter near the bottom of the hole. Put some shavings, tender, etc. in and light it. Feed scraps of dry tender until you get a good flame coming out the top.

      interesting may give it a try  some time
        when I was  younger fellow 40 + years ago , my now departed BIL,  passed this along to me we were fishing one night , he told me as a kid he was taught to fill a coffee can with sand and soak  in  kerosene  , then light it , the sand would act like a wick and slowly allow the fuel to burn giving you light   would last for hours I have not thought about for years your post shook my memory tree . I may have to try it out also

    There's a simpler method and you don't need a punky log. Take four pieces of split firewood. Stand upright with some tinder and small sticks in the center. Wrap with wire to hold the stack together. Light from the bottom. The stack will burn from the inside out, lasting much longer than just a pile of wood, and won't go out. Many youtubes on "Swedish Candle"

    The above is the first one I’ve tried. It didn’t last very long but made a cool flame. I’m just a 65 year old kid who still likes to play with matches.

    We used to use a coffee can with a roll of toilet paper in it(standing up). Dump a bottle of rubbing alcohol in the can, let soak for a little while and light the paper. Worked like a charm. Put a board over the can to extinguish, let cool and put plastic cap on. Re light a day or a week or three later!

     we used to do that for heat in treestand hunting, had to be careful and not knock it over though...........
