   Many a old army vet has told me the same story over the years or said  thats how they were trained . 
   the part about saving the small piece to clean out your fingernail is always a clincher

  Yes the small piece is a must? Could you imagine picking you nose with a dirty finger nail?

  Another method was to keep a rock in the out house, clean much the way as the "army" way but whack your finger across the rock.
