Derivatives were a lot of the equation in 2008, gambling essentially. With the high levels of Corporate debt any sustained downturn could significantly impact companies ability to pay. But not to worry we stopped being Capitalist a long time ago when we bailed out everyone Fed to the rescue for sure 0
