Italy is getting hammered
A quarter of Italy's population has been put under lockdown in a desperate bid to stop the spread of coronavirus as Pope Francis delivered his Sunday prayers via live stream.
The killer disease has gripped Italy where the number of cases rose by 1,247 in the last 24 hours - its biggest daily increase in cases since the outbreak began - taking the total to 5,883.
Another 36 people also died as a result of the virus, taking the total to 233 in the largest outbreak in Europe.
Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte signed a decree in the early hours of this morning that will continue until April 3 stopping about 16 million people from moving in and out of several regions in the country's prosperous north.
The regions quarantined are: Lombardy, Modena, Parma, Piacenza, Reggio Emilia, Rimini, Pesaro, Urbino, Alessandria, Asti, Novara, Verbano-Cusio-Ossola, Vercelli, Padua, Treviso and Venice.
Meanwhile, Pope Francis broke with centuries of tradition by enlisting the help of technology for his weekly Angelus prayer.
'I am close through prayer with the people who suffer from the current coronavirus epidemic,' the 83-year-old pontiff said in a message recorded at the Vatican library and aired live on a screen on Saint Peter's Square.
The Pope himself tested negative for the virus after he fell ill on Ash Wednesday with symptoms of a cold including a cough, fever, chills and sore throat.
Around the world, more and more countries are bracing for a surge in virus cases as the global death toll hits 3,500 with more than 100,000 diagnoses.
Some nations are imitating China - where the virus first emerged late last year and which has suffered the vast majority of infections - by imposing travel controls and shutting down public events.
Many countries - including Australia, Vietnam and the USA - have banned entry to anyone who has travelled through or to China recently.
Other countries, including Jordan and Lebanon, have also banned entry to anyone who travelled to Italy.
Mr Conte said: 'For Lombardy and for the other northern provinces that I have listed there will be a ban for everybody to move in and out of these territories and also within the same territory.

Is there no validity to making a causal connection to the massive influx of middle eastern illegal immigrants and refugees having flooded Italy since the gulf war started???
Has this led to some massive changes for those living in Italy by right of birth or immigration status???
Do I recall a series of stories on the BBC and Irish news about the massive number of so called boat people drowning just as the near the coast of Italy and some of the non contiguous islands on the eastern side???
Just curious as to your thoughts.

Or at least so I was taught - though MHQ did a series of articles once upon a time about military hospital practices in Spain and southern France after WWI may have been a major contributor - Atople was the place possibly???
and just because a story is hateful or prejudiced does not invalidate it - or may not...
I have Irish and polish ancestors who were massacred in Pennsylvania - immigrant non English speaking railroad and coalmine workers who were blamed for a fatal illness...
And the story of the new York port authority and it's island or isolated quarantine hospitals being burned to the ground and looted and the staff and internees murdered when they tried to stop plague ships / the yellow flag and inspection practice origins were similar but aimed at other groups of immigrants...
But sure opinions vary and many media sources turn out to be bad or never fact checked...

Air travel for Foreign Nationals should have been denied early on. Not a cure all, but a good 1st step.

Ken airline travel especially is a key vector magnifier...
Speed and volume of traffic - gathering choke points like airports...
Not only because there is little if any real health screening - but because your in a sealed can swapping air and germs and smells with a few hundred folk...
But I imagine that sailing ships had it real bad for lice and vermin and illness and rodents and insects and cargo contamination...
Heck if you're bread didn't have weevils in it you demanded a ticket refund back in the sailing ship days.
And it's a nice Hollywood fallacy to picture one patient zero or one infected monkey and a pandemic propagates from one source to a second and it expands geometrically...
I think it's far more likely that tons of sick folk are bringing something across a border - way more than we like to admit or think...
But from me its just conjecture and opinion.
Food for thought - if every plane in the air just stopped flying and fell from the sky consider how many folk would die - not just passengers and crew but those in the impact zone on the ground...

That's because the Pakistani government allowed flights into China and then let them fly in until the end of February! Since they are good buddies with the commies in China and now Italy is toast! Unbelievable ignorance from Pakistan!
