The AR10 would probably be more accurate, at longer distances. IMHO.

Personally, I would rather have the M1A.

So basically - Buy them both. 😉

M1A for me. I've had one since 2000, a Springfield Armory standard grade. I love it. I will however, scoop up an AR10 if they get cheap enough.

In order to get the 6.5 Creedmoor chamber you have to buy the 'Loaded M1A' which is more expensive and comes in the non-standard synthetic stock.

The AR10 platforms I've built for competition have all produced 1/2MOA groups and are capable of shooting out to 1,000 yards.
There is significantly better flexibility with the AR platform as opposed to the M1A.
    Best.

Another vote for the AR-10. Skip the sub 7mm calibers and go .308, like God intended.

Agree. Lots more choices for trigger groups, etc. In fact, trying to decide is what’s delaying my AR-10 build.

Okay, the 'group think' appears to be leaning towards the AR-10.  No the question is which one?  I know that there is no single 'mil-spec' specification as there is with the '-15, so what one do you folks think is best?
Nononsense, impressive video!  Unless they did some editing that was a pretty dang quick 5 rounds at 1000 yards!  Probably can't afford one of theirs...
    Randy;
Agreed, leaning towards the .308, but only because they don't make a .270-08 yet (at least not one I've heard of!).

This is called "Why I Despise the M14.." Just one man's opinion but he is very well informed.

Perhaps you will find this advice helpful. I know that personally, I've found few things to disagree with.

I have built a few Palmetto State Armory AR10's with complete satisfaction.

I'm leaning that way...  What length barrel did you go with and what kind of accuracy are you getting out of them, Bruce?  Assuming, of course, that your Nikon scope didn't fall apart... ;)

Dig through your couch cushions and assemble a PSA G3 AR10.
Then save up and buy a M1A. I like mine:

I watched the video in Ricci's post. I don't know what that guy's credentials are, but while he does bring up a few good points, he appears to me to be one of those "hate everything American" types. For a different point of view, how about one from a former forum poster, and a guy that was actually there:

AS A MARINE NCO, I HAD 2 1/2 TOURS IN NAM. IN '65/66 WE HAD THE M-14. GREAT RIFLE, EASY TO CLEAN, NO STOPPAGES I EVER SAW. CLEARED BRUSH, BAMBOO, HUTS AND GOOKS WELL. IN 68-70 WE HAD THE CHANCE TO USE M-16. WE TIRED IT. FIRST FIRE FIGHT, IT JAMMED 2ND SHOT(1ST SHOT DID THE JOB), USED 1911A1 TO FINISH SKIRMISH. AFTERWARDS, CHECKED M-16 OUT, COULD FIND NO PROBLEM, GAVE IT TO MY ARVV SCOUT, GOT MY M-14 BACK AND KEEPT ON TRUCKIN. NOBODY HAD GOOD LUCK WITH THE MI6 IN THOSE DAYS. WE NEVER EVEN GOT PROPER CLEANING RODS, A REAL NECISITY WITH THIS DINKY RIFLE, AND WATER IN THE BARREL WOULD BE A DISASTER.(DURING MOONSOON, EVERYTHING HAD WATER IN IT) THE .223 COULD KILL OUTRIGHT, BUT USUALLY TOOK SEVERAL BODY HITS TO MAKE AN IMPRESSION. USUALLY 1 .308 WOULD DO THE TRICK. ALSO, WATER BUFFALO COULD SOAK UP AND UNGODLY AMMOUNT OF .223 AND BE REALLY "P" OFF!!

I wanted and waited many years to get a springfield M1A  always just out of reach for my modest gun budget .
then about 6 years ? or so ago I decided only live once and was about to buy a new one thru a FFL buddy at cost
with in a day or two of checking prices I happened on a "loaded " version on GB was new in all respects for 200.00 less including shipping for the standard one I was about to order .  than about two years ago I got the bug to "build / assemble some ar rifles
after about a 8 or 10 I moved to a 308  version soon after.  PSA provided the parts ,  both are fun to shoot I can not really declare a winner in best groups or distance I have never really got serious about shooting with them most all I have done is  just back yard wasting ammo with friends and family when we get together
the M1A is a heavy rifle with a scope, sling , cheek riser ,  bi-bod and loaded 20 round mag, I am a lot older but   I tip my hat to those who packed a m-14  all day ( along with all the rest of there equipment  in the military .
the ar10 or what ever people want to call the 308 clone  is a bit lighter and if you have a ar15 its a lot more familiar in take down and operation
my take find a range that rents or a buddy who has them and see which you like my best suggestion

There was the standard editing for the final video but there was absolutely no editing of the shot strings. I was there to witness this testing. This young man is a talented shooter, plain and simple. The rifle was the production model from GAP not any different from the ones they made to sell to the public.

Affordability is up to the individual, their needs and their desires. When you want something and can make use of it in a way which satisfies you then you've made a good decision. Buying it just to sit in a safe can be the expensive road.

We all buy parts or complete firearms based on what we want to afford AND what we PERCEIVE to be acceptable accuracy. Not everyone wants or needs to own a rifle which is capable of 5-shot 1/5MOA groups. Many shooters are perfectly happy to achieve 1MOA groups or smaller for their hunting and plinking rifles. Others who have a yen for competition and being competitive need to assess parts or complete platforms based on performance, knowing that it will be more expensive. You will not shoot tiny groups consistently from an assembly of cheap parts. But if all you need is a lower cost rifle for plinking, you're on the right path.

There is nothing wrong with a frugal build using PSA parts, just use common sense and add up the cost of those individual parts which make up a sub-assembly. Those sub-assembly prices can be misleading... Cheap prices and available parts can lead us down the rabbit hole and end up costing significantly more when they don't meet our performance standards. Do not expect 1/4MOA groups from these assemblies unless you have the ability to finish machine many of the parts for an accurate assembly. Then you need to know exactly how to tune the entire platform for top performance. The folks on those AR boards don't have the vaguest idea of the subtle nuances which go into the making and tuning of a top flight, accurate AR10 rifle.

    Best.

I assembled this psa AR 10 for a little over 500.00 and quite pleased with the results only complaint it's on the heavy side

As much as I love the M1A I would go with a AR-10.  I used a SR-25 and I must say they are awesome.

Savage170, what kind of accuracy are you getting with that rifle?  >1 MOA?  <1MOA?  How is it for reliability?  Barrel length?  Twist rate?
I'd love to get one of the GAP-10's that Nononsense showed above, but at $3,500 they're a bit out of my price range.
KAC and Aero are probably out, too, due to price.
Sure wish I'd been born rich instead of so darned good lookin'! :D

I bought the stripped lower and the complete upper  kit with the parts included to complete the lower.  The rifle really shoots good in a five shot group I get a real  tight cluster with 3 touching and the other two rounds bring it out to a inch. This rifle really likes the 165 grain Fusion load. 20" barrel and 1:10 twist and it has been 100% reliable. I'm using the 10 round Magpul mags
