    Any time a donkey, mule or hinny has something in their mouth and kneels on it,,,,,,you can bet the bank it’s trying to kill it. 

    Those were my thoughts as I watched, doesn't look like he is playing.

    Yeah, bullshot. Here’s an example. Although the lion was dead, the mule was making sure.

    There's a reason people use them for guard animals for goats/sheep. We had a BLM burro but had to get rid of it after it decided it was OK to kill goats also.

    I watched a Mule kill a dog just like that.  Bit it and knelled on it, after it was dead the Mule rolled on the dead dog.

    The dog had wandered on to our place and gone after the Mule.  Me and My Dad were trying to call the dog away but it didn't listen and the Mule got him.  I remember my Dad looking at me and saying something like never turn your back on an animal.

    When the BLM burro was here, the only time I saw him back down was when both my "barn dogs" braced him. They badgered him to a standstill while I watched to make sure burro didn't kill my dog. From that point the burro would retreat to a large oak tree anytime the dogs went to the pasture.

    Speaking of mules, a true story for you folks. Many years ago, I guess before 1950 when I was in first grade Grandpa use to snake logs in Central, Virginia with a mule. He was a saw miller his whole life. Well the son of the sawmills owner had been known to take a bull whip to a mule that was not giving 100%. My Grandpa was a kind gentle man but he would not stand to let anyone abuse an animal. He warned the man one day and told him he better not ever lay a hand on that poor mule again. He said he works hard all day for a bucket of water and a little handful of hay. A few days later this guy breaks out the bull whip again and my Grandpa pulls out a 38 from the little black lunch box that all the saw millers carried. He stuck it in this guys face and told him "Touch that mule again, I will blow your head off" No one ever abused that mule again. The sawmill owner was Grandpa's first cousin and I guess that is why no one called the sheriff. 

    A while later not sure when,Grandpa was sitting on that same mule snaking logs. Sometimes you walked beside and behind mule with long leather straps to work the mule. As i remember there was a collar around the mules neck and chains on both sides with cloth or burlap around them and something on it to keep from rubbing skin off. I think there was a large strap in the middle of the mule also.Then a single tree at the end with a hook on it.

    Well on this day Grandpa got into a nest of yellow jackets sitting on the same mule. They stung both of them terrible and off the mule went knocking Grandpa off with a low branch. His leg got hung in the chain on the side (traces) and he was dragged a long ways thru the woods. He had a very deep cut in his head, seven broken ribs, broken arm, a punctured lung and multiple cuts and bruises. He was in a cast and taped up from waist to his neck, In the beginning they did not know if he would survive. I remember him spitting up blood and he had phenumonia (sp) twice. He was bedridden for a year.

    All during this time while my Grandpa waited and waited and waited for a disability check that took months and months almost a year I think, a man by the name of George Russel gave Grandpa credit and kept him and his family alive. This man owned Russels Garage and General Store on Route 33 in Mineral, Virginia between Bumpass and Fredricks Hall. He was a Angel sent from Heaven and I am sure that is where he is now. But that is another story.
