road trip across Nevada...West to East....

Decided to pack up with the better half and take a road trip across Nevada to Utah. Heading out from Reno, would it be better to take I-80 thru the more populated area's with attractions, or take SR-50, "the loneliest highway in America". Not much attractions, but great scenery, or the other way around is fine with us. Who's been there, and which way would you go??

    I used I-80 after flying to Reno and headed to my property in the Elko area.  Look at those signs on the south side of the interstate that say danger - keep out.  Interesting reason why.

    This time of year, I would take 80. 50 is a pretty drive, but unless the weather forecast says clear blue skies, I'd stay on 80.

    Made that drive half a grundle of times going to the Big Reno Show. Always took 80 because I had times t meet both ways. But still would like to take 50 someday - if I ever go back to Reno. Heck, 80 is bleak and barren enough, and the "Keep Out" signs are for the territorial prison.

    Don't plan on coming back thru Nevada. Probably going into Utah, through western Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and back to Oregon. Basically making a loop... Thanks for the replies..

    Rocky, I was told it was steam geysers.  In looking for property years ago locals
    told me that there is quite a bit of ground water in NV.  Actually, a lot of NV was underwater at. one time long ago.  There are three lakes remaining from that time.  The problem is that the water is extremely hot and a normal well pump can't live long.  Perhaps they were just making fun of this easterner!

    Jeff, you're correct. That's a different stretch of 80, but they have a large field of geothermal wells there extracting steam. I'm told that there are places that look solid, but the "ground" is actually just a thin layer of minerals crusting scalding hot pools. Walk there and you'd die. Like much of the mountain West, Nevada is very active volcanically.
