Dropped 2 8-12" Dead Locusts -
About 30-40' each. Leaning over our Private road. (A Community Service. 😉)
About 4-500' from the end of my driveway. Carried it all in to get it under cover. Many trips. (Supposed to rain/snow for the next 4-5 days.) I Really miss having a Pickup truck.
Good stuff. (Exhausting.) Burned some Locust last night, from a 8-10" one I dropped yesterday. Very hot. Good stuff.
It sucks getting Old.
Stihl 2/1 sharpener working Awesome. Cut through the Locust like Butter.

Yep. Very solid. Been looking at these several trees for a couple years now. Have about 3 more to go.
One was way leaning over our road, due to all the rain we have been having. It would have been across the road in a day or two.
Had to peel a 1" thick Poison Oak vine from around the one yesterday.
May have to split some base logs, (12") from these trees. May just throw them in, with the fire going good. These were thrown in my outside covered area. (By the front door.) Nice to have it ready. Supposed to rain for the next 3 days, then back down to 16-17°. Tried to get on it yesterday and today.

hope you don't get poison, did that one year in january, hands and forearms broke out next day from the poison oak vine, never figured it would have enough sap/oil in it in january to get poison from......... 0 -

I get the stuff bad. Had gloves on, threw them away after use. I consider that sheeit potent, any time I confront it. Used Ninja Pro gloves from my last job. Made sure there was nothing left on the pieces to be burned. Was glad to have it last night. Wood Stove, very hot. Bi-metal fan, doing the "whop, whop, whop." That is my clue, to dial it down.

We have a couple VERY old cataba worm trees in our back yard that we are about to cut down. The poison oak has grown up in one so badly that it has killed the tree and the second one just looks like some haunted mansion tree that is barely alive. I'm DREADING dealing with it. Larry wants to put a koi pond where these trees are, which just sounds like another thing to deal with to me.....but his grandparents had one and he's convinced it would be fun. 0 -

Big Poison Oak vines are no joke. Be VERY careful with that stuff. The LAST thing you want to do, is burn it.

I moved up here 24 years ago, and bought 38 acres. I had scores of big healthy locust trees. And the blight hit 20 years ago and killed them all. I burn a lot of locust. Great firewood. Locust is easy to split.
And my place is covered with giant poison ivy vines. Good God they are as big around as my arm. They have choked many trees to death. Fortunately, I am not allergic to poison ivy. I can cut poison ivy vines with a chain saw for an hour, wearing a t shirt, and never catch the ailment.0 -
That sheeit consumes me. I treat it as no Joke. Ever. Learned my lesson.

We have locust in the 10-14" range, right around me, easy.

Locust make great fence posts if you stack and dry for a year or two. Locust will last in the ground at least 30 years, maybe more. 0 -

There's a BIG difference between black locust and thorny locust. Black locust makes good posts (not as good a osage orange/hedge) but requires seasoning until the bark falls off or stripping the bark from unseasoned posts. About 30-40 years is the expectation for those. I have lots of fence hung on black locust and have had to begin replacing some after 35 years.
When people report using perfectly good posts for firewood, I cringe but it's a choice.
We burn quite a bit of the "female" thorny locust(it's the one with pods but not thorns). It burns hot but has a lot of oil in it which can be problematic for some chimneys. Split and seasoned for a year female thorny locust wood produces a LOT of heat while using trees that are of nearly no value for any other purpose.0 -
These are thorny Locust. They have been standing dead for several years. I have been eyeing them for a while, wanting to take them down. It has been raining so much this winter that a lot of trees around the area have gone down. I noticed the other day that one was leaning way in to the road and was only a matter of time till it went down. Decided to take it down before it blocked our small private road.
They have been dead long enough that the upper limbs were all gone and the bark can be removed easily. Had a couple days of decent weather. Snowing hard this am. Supposed to get in to the low teens in a couple days. I feel good about having it in the wood pile. Burned some the other day. Nice hot fire. Just started another fire this morning. Once it gets going good, I will add a locust log.

LOL...I had to read the title of this thread (3) times to understand. What, with the locust swarms going on over in Africa right now I saw this thread and thought...8" to 12" locusts???....DAAYYYYUM!!! I didn't think them critters got THAT big!!!

I do however remember big green grasshoppers in Europe as a child that had to be at least 6".

I'm sure all of you know this, but be cautious about burning wood that has poison vine on it. My sister-in-law inhaled smoke froma fire burning poison vines and had a severe reaction. Be careful out there.
