Had my colonoscopy today
What a pain on the butt. Last summer I took the cologuard test and it came back positive, so I scheduled a "look see up the back passage" for Sept. Then the wife fell and buggered herself up, so I lost my driver and spent most of the rest of the year taking care of her. I wanted to get past most of the bad winter (which we missed out on so far this winter), so I finally made an appointment for today.
The preperation wasn't too bad as long as I didn't stray too far from the bathroom, but drinking 2 gallons of prep was a bit much.
Anyway you guys that have had it know what follows, and the results were 5 polyps removed, and a mild case of diverticulitis. I didn't think that was too bad considering what the outcome could have been. So now I guess I am on a yearly check up basis.

Doc says the one I'll get next year will be my last one. I've been clean so far, and so if I'm good again at age 74, I can confidently put aside those worries. Ditto for prostate, which is also just fine. Got a colonoscopy every five years since age 60. (With never the same prep day procedure twice. Some were worse than others. I found the hunger to be the worst part, actually.) 0 -

A friend in the healthcare biz told me to get some of those wet wipe things versus wiping myself raw, good advice along with not straying far from the John. I figured if I had a spare day off I could go cut some trees down at my property and was wisely advised against it. I had no idea a human being could go that much! 0 -
Go get a couple of packs of the baby wipes with lotion. Keep in the fridge where you can grab them on the way. My instructions said "stay near a bathroom" should have said "Stay in the bathroom". Stash a couple of good books in the potty, along with a smart phone/ tablet to let you play poker on line. Yes, the prep is a nuisance. So is dying from colon cancer.
For those that have never had a colonoscopy and are concerned about discomfort- had mine under general anesthesia. Went directly from pretty little nurse saying "Say good night, Gracie" to "time to wakeup now" with NOTHING in between. Got up, got dressed, daughter drove me home with a stop for food. Would recommend getting some yogurt after the procedure- to replace the little bugs that normally live in the gut. You just washed most of them away.
For any of you that are self conscious, your wife has been going to see her ob/gyn and get a pep test once a year. She put up with hers, you can put up with yours.0 -
Joe I'm 71 and this was my first one. I've been taking the poop tests for years and they always came back negative until the last one. We had baby wipes in the bathroom cabinet and I did get them out after about 10 rounds on the pot. It was starting to get sore, so I used them. As far as reading material, that wasn't neccessary. Almost as soon as my butt hit the seat, my faucet opened up and away we went.
As far as hunger, I didn't really experience much until after everything was over. I took some breakfast bars with us for both of us to eat on the way home, but I ate them all before we left the hospital.
When the Doc administered the sedative, it wasn't more than 5-10 seconds and I was in la la land. Woke up back in my room without any memory past the sedative.
It wasn't a pleasant experience, but the recovery was a lot faster than my 5 bypasses. As far as my wife's pep tests, she's getting to the age where she has lost a lot of her pep, but that's to be expected in your elder years.
My youngest brother has been growing a lot of polyps the last few years, so he is getting the procedure almost every 6 months.Joe

I wish you luck and hope you never get the word that it's too late to cure your colon cancer. Because it's a cancer that shows no symptoms until it IS too late. 0 -
I think all the GI anesthesiologists now use Propofol, Michael Jackson's drug of choice. You wake up immediately when the infusion is stopped, & feel great. But, they still won't let you drive yourself home. 0 -
I had one a couple years ago and when I was waking up in the recovery room my loving(?) wife happily exclaimed, "Good news, Honey! They found your head!" 9 -
My wife’s cousin got his bowel punctured by the procedure. Spent about a week in the hospital. I’m told that’s why they don’t like to do it after age 70. 0 -
First one I had done several years back was a breeze except for one thing . Turned out my first cousins daughter was my nurse ! This is a little girl who I watched grow up next door , talk about an embarrassing moment . But it all turned out ok .

Been told by doctors office I should get it done as they have no record of me doing one yet. I told them I'll get it when I'm old. They said I'm there,I'm 62. 0 -
Glad you only had a few polyps and have a clean bill of health. When I had my second colonoscopy at age 57 they found stage III cancer which unfortunately quickly turned into Stage IV when it metastasized to my liver and then to my peritoneum. I have been fighting it for more than 3 years and although I continue to fight there is no cure for where I'm at. Life expectancy for stage IV colorectal cancer is less than 36 months so I have gone past the average and am not giving up. If you are 45 and not yet had a colonoscopy please check with your doctor and arrange for one. The minor inconvenience is much better than the 3 surgeries. three different courses of radiation and uncountable sessions of chemotherapy I have gone through. If you don't believe me, ask MrMike about his fight with this terrible disease. 3 -

Had one and they said come back in 10 years. A doctor told me years ago to use Metamucil daily as the fiber will slick the insides of you colon and I have used it religiously for over 30 years. Also Doc told me that alcohol consumption was causing a lot of peoples lower end problems, as it seems about 70% of the population are aloholics. Smoking will destroy your top end and Alcohol will destroy your lower end.... 0 -
After my first one, Doc said I was in pretty good shape but to eat more fiber. He suggested Grape Nuts. I've been adding them to cereal and yoghurt ever since. Just finished an Oikos Triple Zero Mixed Berry with a full scoop of Grape Nuts, in fact. As a Grammar Cop, I don't want to have a semi-colon. 3 -
Thanks Rocky, I had forgotten all about Grape Nuts. I used to eat them all the time when I was a kid, and always liked them. And I concur, I don't want to have a ; either. 0 -
I can hardly eat yoghurt without them any more. That crunch factor has become mandatory. They're also good sprinkled on a salad, btw. 0 -
The worst part for me was waking up in the recovery room with a six foot six male orderly spooning with me.................... 0
