I went home the same day with some stuff in my nose to absorb any drainage/blood, and a tube in each side to help breathing. Not all that bad considering the relief it gave me being able to breath thru my snout, and making my CPAP use much better. With a good Doctor, I'm sure that you won't regret it Ken.

I was home the same day.  You WILL need to have someone there that can drive you!  Unlike Toad67, I had no packing in mine.  The doc said it was one of the worst he'd ever seen.  One thing I can guarandangtee that you don't want to do for a while is to sneeze!

Pretty much knew I would need to have a driver. I would assume you are sedated. I know they will not let you drive for 24 hrs. Have unfortunately gone through about 3 surgeries in the last year or so.

This one, I really need to get done.

I probably need something along these lines. Quit smoking regularly January 2019 and still can't hardly smell anything and I can still light one up and inhale just like I never quit.

Trust me, you will not regret it.  I had about 95% occlusion in the right side due to a jet-ski wreck (DAMN that was fun!!) and all 8 sinuses completely full of polyps and infection.   I feel your pain!  Now I can actually breathe through my nose and smell again.

Sorry you sound desperate I shouldn't have joked, good luck with that and I will repent my attempt at humor with a prayer for you.

I anticipate a really bad night. Totally closed up right now. Feeling Claustraphobic just sitting here. Had to get out of bed around 1:30 am last night due to feeling claustrophobic, could not relax at all. It is suffocating.

I have been putting this off, but now it is quite literally at the do or die phase. I should have been on the phone today.

You could schedule an appointment with a Proctologist but I doubt they will do you any good.
I was 'ported and polished' by two different Ears, Nose and Throat specialists.  Sometimes the inflammation from 'Rhino nose' comes back, thus the 2nd procedure.
Both time were done 'out patient' where I went in the morning and was home by that afternoon.
You are going to need a driver.

Ken, my uncle who restores Mustangs in Mineral, Va. had the rotor rooter done and it worked great for a couple of years and most of the tissue grew back but he still gets some relief.

I have a deviated septum and my nose is plugged up pretty bad on one side. Was told by a Nose and Throat  Doctor it needed to be operated on but never did. I get bad sinus headaches occasionally  from it. When it gets bad I use Sudafed or the Walmart brand that comes in box of 48 for $6 and change. You have to show your drivers license to get it. Do not get the PE type, it never works for me. The type that you show your license to get works like magic for me in less than 1/2 hour. (Pseudoephedrine HCI 30 mg)

There is also the NeilMed Sinus Rinse System that might help some, but your claustraphobia might be a problem.

You are at the point where you have to do something. No one should have to suffer like that.

You guys should have not snorted all that cocaine back in the ‘80’s.

Years ago my FIL burned a lot of wood in open fireplace. Depending on damper position  and amount of draft or even down draft the wood smoke would raise hell with my nose. Course sounds like you have wood burning stove and I don't know if wood smoke is a factor. The Sudafed will reduce the swelling in nasal passages within 1/2 hour if wood smoke is causing a problem. Not a permanent fix but just a thought.

Ken, you may not have claustrophobia; you are describing "fear of suffocation", which is a reasonable reaction when your nasal cavity is compromised.  A better approach to diagnosing your medical problem might be to get an evaluation at a Major Medical Center.  At the least, I would want to see an allergist to rule out chronic sinusitis.  (As we age, we tend to get new allergies.)

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. I have Mitral valve regurgitation, a bad case of Sleep Apnea, a badly deviated septum with probably a snootful of polyps that has gotten much worse over the last couple years. Those three things together make up a very bad combination.

Yes, the "fear of suffocating," is very real for me.

Went to the store (Food Lion) looking for the medicine you recommended. They only had the PE (Phenylephrine tablets.) Only 10 mg. Took one about a half hour ago. I can tell i am breathing better. Thank you. I will continue to look for the variety and dosage you suggested. (This time at a couple pharmacies.) I guess Food Lion does not carry it, due to Meth head shoplifters.

Tried to make an appointment at the VA. today. I must first take a 3+ hr round trip & go submit my paperwork proving my eligibility (was declined in Nov. "Made too much $ the year before.") Before they can schedule me an appointment.

Ken, the PE type will work a little but the other type is ten times better. I won't waste my time or money with the PE type. Do you have a Walmart near you? They almost always carry it. Their brand is almost half the Sudafed brand. In New York they track the good stuff thru your drivers license. I guess the meth heads are causing all the problems, like you say. You have to go to the pharmacy to get the stuff but you don't need a prescription for it.

I know wood smoke will raise hell with some peoples nasal passages. Been there, done that. Sounds like maybe a severe allergy related problem in addition to your other problems. I hope your "Buddy" is not causing some of the allergy problems. I know nothing could come between me and my little "Willie." Again it is Pseudoephedrine HCI 30 mg.

Thanks Ray. I plan on looking for it tomorrow.

After initially feeling some relief, I realized it was only wishful thinking. I took another to increase the dosage to 20mg. Used my nasal spray to try and help as well. I pretty much know that once my sleep medicine wears off after 3-4 hours, (supposed to be good for 8?) I will wake up and be done. It's been like that for months now. Have been awake since about midnight last night. Gave up & got out of bed at 1am. I appreciate your input.

Ken, should be tiny red pills. You should take two at a time when you get the right ones. One just won't cut it. If I am bad off I take two when I get up and two more just before bed time. If not bad off two just before bed time. I think you can sneak another two in there, just make sure to read directions on box. Careful with that nasal spray (Rebound)

Had the same problem with my heart as you. Went to Good Sam in Suffern for most of pre-op test and Dr. Craig Smith in Columbia Presbyterian cut me open and put a implant in my Mitral Valve. I told them at Good Sam nobody touches my heart but Craig Smith. I figured if he was good enough for Bill Clinton, Barbara Walters and others he was good enough for me.

I have had a hard life Ken, like you probably ran too many chainsaws and abused my body too much. I had a good friend in the Class of 1917 at West Point who use to tell me "If you want to keep going Ray don't stop" He survived the 06 SF Quake, fighter plane crash WW2, and marriage to Italian opera singer. If I could just get out of this Socialist State and return to my native Virginia for a couple of years my life would be complete.

I know it sounds counter-intuitive but try laying off the nasal sprays for a while.   They help at first but then seem to make matters worse.
Hope you can get some relief, Ken.

I heard you Ray and Neo, about the nasal spray. It says not to use it 3 days in a row. I try and only use it when it is unbearable, and instead of 2-3 squirts per nostril it recommends, I only do one small spray up each nostril. I am aware of the counterproductive results overuse creates. Thanks though.

Have you ever tried Flonase/Fluticasone spray for an extended period of time? It is OTC in both brand name and generic at any drug store. It doesn't work instantly like Afrin, but builds up over a week or more and reduces inflammation, as well as blocking the effects of allergies. It is a mild steroid, but pretty much harmless since it is administered locally and you get no systemic dosage.

They actually use this stuff in people with nasal polyps as well. I use it twice a year during allergy season here, and also use a nasal strip when I go to bed if I'm stuffy. Can't hurt to try if you haven't already.
