    I'd agree, that was really weird. If I was that guy, I'd have killed that dog by dropping both knees on it's chest. (Army training, when dealing with a dog.) Failing that, I'd have been bashing his head on the ground, while on top of it.

    I NEVER let my Pit off leash/Cable run. You CAN NOT let your dog run loose. Responsibility comes in to play. I'd agree, that was really strange, that it ran in and singled the child out. Horrific. Yet another reason to CCW. Dead dog right there.

     Not really strange. I'd bet half of dog attacks play out like that. Dog attack I suffered went down the same way. Untrained, un-socialized dog breaks free and eventually attacks a child or an adult. Fortunately the dog latched onto the child's coat/clothing instead of her neck or face.

    I'd agree, if the dog only latched on to the coat or clothing. Very lucky. I'd have killed that dog, by whatever means necessary.

    I reiterate, I NEVER let Buddy off leash or Overhead Trolley run. It is responsible ownership. It comes down to that.

    My guess is the dog belonged to the person on the sidewalk that walk by.

    According to witnesses it was a pit bull.  And, contrary to the story in the link, the girl did receive injuries which required medical care, "puncture wounds to the left bicep and tricep".  The dude who dove on the dog stabbed it with a knife to get it to let go.  Pretty risky move in an encounter like that, but kudos to him (for stabbing the dog and not the kid).
    I don't know what I'd do if I saw something like this.  I'd definitely do something, but it's a scary situation to think about...and whatever it would be would need to be fast.  I know this sounds crazy, but I'd probably take my chances with the dog before I considered using a firearm.
    Yep, no chance to use a firearm while the dog had a hold on the girl.  Maybe after let go.

    I would have been between the dog and the child before it went for her.   So many people don't understand every dog isn't looking to be petted.  If the dog is okay great, but be safe first.

    American Pit Bull Terriers as a breed aren’t any meaner than any other breed.  They are just better at it.  The breed was invented specifically for fighting.  If there is a Pit Bull and Chihuahua mix I don’t want to meet that dog.

     

    The meanest dog I ever met was a Saint Bernard and the craziest dog with the shortest fuse was an English Pointer.

    You are the one that has No Idea ! After workin apx. 30 years in Law Enforcement I do know what Im talking about ! Check Your facts ! There are MORE Negative Incidents with Pit Bulls than ANY other breed ! Period ! Blame bad breeding , stupid owners , blood lines ,,, Whatever : Its a FACT !!!
    and : 
    I would NOT own one ( have been a responsible dog owner all my life ) , Or a pet rattlesnake or a pet water buffalo .......
    I have Labs ( 2 ) , have NEVER had a problem with my labs or beagles ....

    It does seem Pit Bull attacks are more common then others, I know some people have them and swear they are gentle and wouldn't hurt anyone. And others say they will tear anyone apart that comes before them. I don't know but they are sure as hell muscular and seem to have a reputation for trouble deserved or not

    A reasonable response Sir. I thank you. My dog senses aggression/weird behavior, and acts appropriately. (ALWAYS under my control.) There are a LOT of owners, that should not own this breed. I am not one of them. My dog is, if not anything else, Responsibly Owned. Those that are not, are a danger, due to Irresponsible Ownership. Nothing more.

    (Also,) I would venture to say Pit Bull attacks are much more reported due to Media Hype. (Kind of like Assault Weapon use.) If it were truly known what breed bites more often, it would not be a Responsibly Owned Pit.

    I like to think that I would also, but that dog came out of nowhere. Should NOT have been off leash. Irresponsible Ownership.

    That's good Ken, I USED to have a friend who had a Pit Bull that was according to him, totally under his control. The dog seemed like he wanted to eat me but my Buddy said all was good. I was visiting with him at his house, everything was fine, I made no sudden moves or did anything different at all, yet all of the sudden the dog lunged across the coffee table and tried to attack me. Scared is apparently just slightly faster than pissed because I managed to leap out of the way, and while the dog was regaining his balance from the coffee table rollover I managed to slam the bedroom door and wait until my EX friend got control. I left and never went back.  Granted the Dog may have sensed my fear but he clearly was not in the control of the master. On the other hand, I knew a disabled vet once who had two Dobermans, they sat by his side while he was in his chair and watched everyone but NEVER made a move on anyone the entire time I knew him so obviously some dogs can be trained to attack on command not individual choice.

    Very nice. My dog is not like that, if I introduce you. "He is Okay, he is okay." He is good to go/and you to him. Calms right down to Love Me mode.

    If I do not introduce you, it is a different scenario.

    I am good with that, the way it should be.

    Having a dog that tried to attack you in his presence, not a properly Acclimated/Socialized/Obedient Pit. Mine is.

    Ken I am not trying to argue with you.  The fact is that any breed of dog can bite a human at anytime.  That is a simple fact of life.  I don't care how perfectly socialized, how perfectly trained or how responsible the owner.  Any dog can bite/attack at any time and we may never know why the dog did as it did.  The problem as I see it is that the pits are so much stronger than most other breeds.  If my Border Collie bites someone the Border Collie probably won't do much damage because a Border Collie typically "snaps" like she is working sheep.  You know pits have incredible jaw strength and tend to "latch" on.  For all I know other breeds of dogs bite more than pits but don't do enough damage to the  human to make the news.  I mean when was the last time you read a news article about dog attacks child, doesn't break skin.   

    I am also a responsible dog owner.  My young dog (6 Mo.) has yet to be outside unsupervised.  It has only been the last 4 weeks she has been outside off leash.  Leash went back on a few days ago because she wasn't listening.  Training a BC can be a trial but I enjoy a challenge!!
