    So many of the dog breeds have had the purpose breed out of them.   Bull dog lines used to be powerful athletic dogs that had a working purpose.  Now they are slobbering genetic train wrecks.     But when people don't work their dogs, keep them inside and start breeding for other traits the performance side suffers.  The bulldogs are real examples of this.  Not because of this guys reasoning about pure breeds, but because people breed for undesirable traits  from less than adequate animals.  Had they breed for the working traits the dogs was used for there would be a different outcome.

    Mostly I've had hunting dogs that were breed for the purpose and they did it well.   One of my favorites though was a mixed breed that would hunt anything I wanted, had personality, and was just a fun dog to be with.

    Purebred AKC, and actual purebred are vastly different. I'll take VDD Drahthaar every day for the way I hunt.

    We have always had Mutts mostly couldn't afford a "pure bred" and we always got our dogs at the pound. We have had some great dogs, the smartest was a border collie mix, he literally understood quite a few words, we couldn't use the word outside because he immediately went for the door, so we used to spell it and that took him all of about three weeks to figure out. Wife has a Bichon/terrier mix now that is smart but not as smart as that border collie mix. On the other hand he is more loving and is a registered therapy dog. I like dogs, Cats not so much

    My dog (Buddy) has a whole plethora of words that he understands fully, in his arsenal. A lot of times just shaking my head yes, or no, does it. Makes eye contact, and understands subtle nuances. A very intelligent dog. By far the smartest, and the best I have ever owned. Very intuitive.

    We've had SEVERAL types of dogs over the years.    We had fed several strays that came up before we moved here because it seemed that there were always dogs coming around that nobody knew who they belonged to.   Where we live now there aren't many people around, so we know who owns pets nearby and I rarely see anything roaming around.    The SMARTEST dog we've ever owned was a Cocker Spaniel that knew speak, whisper, crawl, back up, lay down, shake, shake left, roll over, jump up, hold (on her nose), stay, and go get in your bed.   She was amazing.     The SWEETEST dog we've ever owned was a Golden Retriever named Jack.    He never once ever went to the bathroom in the house, but he wasn't interested in learning things....we did teach him to sit and shake.    The most personality is the Bull Dog by far.   She talks to you, whines, makes the other dogs go outside, acts like she needs to go out and then backs up and looks at the treats.  She's just a LOT of fun.    The St Bernard is a sweety....just a flirt and would love nothing better than to hug you up to her on the couch and let you tell her own pretty she is.    Our Pomeranian was a clown......energy for DAYS....wanted to show the ladies how sexy he was at all times.    We had a Bull Terrier brought to us at the same time as the St Bernard and he just didn't fit....he was too young, and played too hard for our home, but I think he would have been great if we didn't have four dogs when he came along.     The newest one is a mixbreed that has to be part Wolfe Hound.....she is tall, looks like a wire hair terrier, but a LOT bigger.  She's sweet, but its been hard to teach her the rules.   She is finally getting it though.

    All dogs are work.....all dogs are worth it though.

     I had a good friend that told me that Golden Retrievers use to a good game dog in the past but have been pacified by suburban households making them lap dogs now.

    Scientists concluded that every 4.4 pounds of body mass reduce a dog’s life expectancy by about a month.
