I find it annoying when a stranger refers to me as bud, I tend to take it as insulting.  But YMMV

I generally try to not make my insulting greetings ambiguous, so 'Bud' doesn't really bother me.
"Hey Jacka**...", or "Hey *..." seem to work pretty well.  "Hey Cranius..." is always a good one too cuz you usually have to explain it to them..."You know, cranial-rectal inversion is just a temporary condition, but in your case your cranium actually doubles as your *!  Cranius!"
    Likewise, FCD, likewise!!!

I was nick named Buddy as a child mostly by my grandmother, it stuck.
I'm a William III, my grandfather was Bill, my Dad was Billy, my mothers name was Willa and she went by Billie to all but my grandmother who refused to call her anything but Willa, and so their simply wasn't anymore room for another Bill and I became Buddy. I can't tell you how many times a man would say something like "Hey little Buddy" And I was left wondering in astonishment how they knew my name!
When I went to work, I felt like Buddy was a more Juvenile name and I switched to Bill at work, I use that name but my family will always know me as Buddy!

I use 'Bud' quite frequently, never as an insult, but as a compliment as Kimi described.  Like FCD, I have other names for insults.
    Nice post, Thanks Bud.

    Yep.

Bud, Chief, Boss.  All the same, not complimentary.

    You, too, Bud, you too!
It is surprising that the poem I also posted up about, "Unknown: USMC" has not received any comments, so I think, I'll delete it and repost without any comments.

I have one friend that I've known for 30 years that uses the word "bud".  It doesn't bother me but I use "bud", "sport", and "pal" sometimes as a sarcastic insult.

My Army buddy has called me "Bud" since 1961 at Ft. Jackson. Once in a while he calls me Maggie as in Maggie's Drawers. I guess because similar to my last name. Hell, they never waved the white flag at me. Was Expert Rifleman.

I changed the flag color twice and am leaving it at white. It signified a total miss on the target. Some articles say red and later in Marines and at Perry i think it was a red disk. My Army bud from Piedmont, SC and I both agree it was a white flag in 1961 at Ft. Jackson, SC

I called a pizza guy "Bud" today because he walked away before I could get out "Buddy."  I needed to order another pizza.

Had a late friend who was just given the name "J" when he was born.  Not Jay, just J.  He went his entire life of 75 years being called Bud.  I met him when he was around 50 and always called him J.  It kind of ticked him off at first until I told him how I once about got into a bar brawl by calling someone Bud.

Never used that handle again, as the guy in the bar I p***** off was a young bull more than twice my size and a biker wearing his colors to boot!  (he also was not alone)

One of the best parts of having a true friend was that my friend J forgave me and accepted my use of his name.

Some really good comments in this thread regarding names like Bud.  I usually apply it to a friend, a perceived friend, kinfolks, but usually not strangers.  Take Brother, for example, it is used a lot among military and religious friends and acquaintances.  Most anytime I refer to someone as Bud, Boy, etc., I mean it to be a compliment, most especially if it does not come across with sarcasm.  BTW, my nickname among my Mexican family members is Boy.
