    1st thing I was wondering when I first started reading this - Did he survive/make it? Answered in short order.

    Lived (and died) doing his dream. Gotta respect that.

    He was wanting to get up to 5,000 feet so he could verify that the Earth is flat. Wouldn't it have been easier to have just bought a plane ticket? He could have gotten up to about 35,000 feet and not had to risk his life all that much.

    The video is on LiveLeak. His chute deployed on takeoff. The flight was a success; it was the landing which was the big disappointment.

     I read he knew the earth was round but saying it was flat help get investors in his projects 
       not defending him he may have been a bit crazy , overconfident in ability's   ,  but think of all the people in history who took the first step . leap, dive. high speed run , ship ride,  excursion, to unknown with a  almost a guarantee one way trip  challenge and never made it  except the next day news ,     but the few that do succeed  make history .
     he had a dream and followed it 
    I would guess just a few seconds  if still conscious to say oooooooohhhhhhhhhhh no  
     with out extreme risk takers where would we be

    I admire courage.  A scarce commodity these days.  If pioneers like Otto Lilienthal had not risked their lives, we never would have invented the airplane.

    Watched a documentary on the guy. It showed his first launch and landing where he injured his spine.
