mystery solved, now what
Have rows and rows of underground tunnels around and in the barn running through the chicken pen. At first I thought moles, then found above ground "nests" with no babies for identification. Lastly I found a huge nest made of large sticks, bits of straw and pieces of blackberry vines built on the z-turn. I was stumped. I set live mouse trap and a small critter live trap.
Caught a vole in the small critter live trap. I have ordered two rodent (rat size) live traps to see how many I can catch and relocate. I have four outside dogs so poison isn't an option. Anyone have any other ideas for eradication?

I’ve got them, too. They are after grubs under the turf. Spraying with an insecticide like Triazicide kills the grubs. It’s available at Walmart. 0 -

Voles are primarily herbivores and moles are meat eaters moles generally make the holes where voles look like little mices 0 -

Phostoxin,........gas them dead throughout their tunnels. Worked 100% for me. 0 -

I think I have tried just about everything there is on moles over years, traps,poison,railroad fusses and even and digging them out. But the best and most sure way I found to get rid of them is this, step and flatten out the tunnels, then when you see movement use either 12 gauge or a 410, I prefer the 410 my self.

Oxy/acetylene torch. Turn it on, don't light it. Give it 3 minutes, shut it down, MOVE THE TORCH- and then toss a lit match over there. 0 -

Put up a sign for free cheese and beer at 3:00 pm tomorrow. When they all come running to the bait blast-em. PS: if they don't show up eat the cheese and drink the beer before it gets too warm. Do this every 1/2 hour and if nothing else you won't care and will get a good nights sleep 0 -
As been mentioned already, moles and voles are two very different critters and their eating habits are opposite of each other. Voles are the little menaces that enjoy destroying your garden vegetable and flower plants. The bait needed to trap them has to be something plant based. They are also quite intelligent and learn quickly about traps and avoid them.
Voles are the reason I adopted a pair of "shop cats" that lived in my outdoor workshop and had the freedom to roam my entire outdoor areas where they quickly found, stalked, and eliminated those pesky critters!0
