The road tax is one thing that gets me about electric vehicles but the other thing is all these charging systems I see at different places.  I never see where the electric vehicle has to pay for the recharge.

The manual transmission will come back in vogue when poor people can no longer afford to repair automatic transmissions and can't afford private transportation too because of costs. Electrical cars will be sidelined every summer and winter when all hydrocarbons are banned from being combustible and there is only renewable energy to use.

Then public transportation will be all A.I. driven and there will be no more fun in driving anyway. ;)

This is in line with a recent study showing how 40% of Americans don’t have $400 saved up for emergency expenses. So, it’s easy to see why a car repair bill will force them to borrow money.

Things could get even pricier if we’re talking about transmission repair cost. We’re talking hundreds, even thousands of dollars if you need a rebuilt. Even simple issues, like fluid leaks, can already cost you a couple of hundred dollars.

If your transmission is completely dead, a replacement can cost you up to a whopping $6,000. Of course, this still depends on the kind of car you drive and your location.**** You’ll also pay less if you have a manual transmission.*****

What about the idiots who don't know how to use a clutch and wear it out in a hurry. Constant stop and go city driving is hard on a clutch vs a automatic transmission. Then there are those that are getting older and physical limitations make an automatic transmission almost mandatory. A friend has his manual 02 vette for sale. He just took delivery of a 19 vette with an automatic transmission because of left leg and ankle problems. Bob

    +1

I like a Manual Transmission and had nothing but them until I was 36 y/o.  My wife cannot drive a stick so I got my 1st truck with an AT, it was a 1 ton dodge with a V-10.

I have a stick in my 74  Power wagon 4 speed granny low.

I will never have an electric car.

They put in a charging station at the local Wally World that's been up and running for about a year now.  I drive by it 5-6 times a week and I have yet to see a single battery buggy plugged in and charging.

How do the charging stations work?   Do you pay for the juice?  If so how much does it cost?

There are a few ways at least with Tesla. Some models come with unlimited charging when purchased new. You can also get milage for referring others who buy a Tesla (something like 5,000 miles worth of juice per referral), last but not least you pay for what you use through an app in the car.

I don’t think an electric car is a terrible thing if it fits your circumstances. I need to hold 3 kids and we regularly drive 6hrs from Orlando to Pensacola, so wouldn’t work for me, but if you are in the same general area 5 days a week, don’t have a bunch of kids, I think they would work fine.

    They are fast.

If I remember correctly Edsel sold well for a short time.
Yes, those charging stations should be at the back of parking lots. Then the people so concerned about the environment can walk.

Electric motor technology peaked early in the last century. There have been a few improvements in materials but the basic design is old.
The holdback is in battery technology and I believe there are discoveries on the horizon.
All the folks who’ve bought electric and hybrid cars have been funding research.
It’s coming, just a matter of time.

An graduate student recently invented a battery and tested it. It had 400,000 cycles of charge and discharge with little to no loss of capacity.

Serf, a lot of your post sounds like a commercial for a car warranty company!

Not if you own a manual transmission ,you can get a rebuild installed and be your own insurer. I buy House insurance because I don't have that much cash on hand to rebuild it out-of-pocket.
